High average power high repetition rate TEA CO2 lasers have important applications in laser material processing, laser air pollution detecting, laser ranging radar, electro-optic warfare, laser propulsion, laser chemistry and so on. This paper focuses on the key technology study and the system integration of high average power high repetition rate TEA CO2 lasers. Much theoretical and experimental work has been carried out and the achievements are as follows:(1) A universally applied software is developed to design 3D uniform electrodes of deferent parameters. A finite element simulation software-ANSYS is introduced to analyze the Ernst electrode system's field uniformity under the influence of manufacturing and positioning errors.(2) Printed Circuit Board (PCB) preionization is successfully scaled to a large discharge volume. A TEA CO2 laser of 3.6kW average power has been developed successfully. More investigation is carried on the preionization mechanism of PCB preionized TEA CO2 lasers. The result reveals that surface preionization plays a dominant role in obtaining uniform large volume discharges.(3) A TEA CO2 laser of 12kW average power has been developed successfully. The feasibility of using a rotating spark gap as the high power high voltage switch is verified at twelve-kilowatt average output power level. Technical foundation has been settled for applying the rotating spark gap to higher output power TEA CO2 lasers.(4) A new type of laser resonator with annular output beam (hollow beam) is proposed in this paper. The method is to achieve annular output beam by outer ring coupling in a stable laser resonator. Amplitude distributions and phase distributions of the fundamental mode on mirrors and in the diffraction-coupling output field are computed by Fox-Li numerical iteration method. The ring output spot of the fundamental mode is obtained from a high gain TEA CO2 laser by experiment.(5) Average output power up to 3kW has been realized in a line tunable TEA CO2 laser.
