High power high repetition rate TEA CO2 laser is a kind of laser with a wide range of applications. All the investigations in this paper are on high power high repetition rate high beam quality TEA CO2 lasers. After making a review on CO2 lasers, especially TEA CO2 lasers, We studied the configuration, buildup and characteristics of the TEA CO, laser systematically. With respect to engineering applications, the emphasis was put on the laser's repetition rate and the spatial distribution of the output beam. Based on the analysis on the limitation of the repetition rate, a new excitation scheme of sequential discharge was designed and realized. The repetition rate of the output laser pulses and the average power can be multiplied, while the configuration of the laser modules keeps unchanged. The spatial distribution of the TEA CO, laser's output beam was measured experimentally and the high quality beam with M2 factor of 1.1 was obtained. The formation mechanism of the "flat-top"beam output from the TEA CO2 laser was investigated. It has been demonstrated experimentally that the intense saturation owing to the high gain of the TEA CO., laser makes the profile of the output beam widen and uniformed, and the intense saturation is the reason for the distribution of "flat-top" The propagation of the TEA CO, laser's output beam was investigated through experimental measurement and theoretical calculation, and the measurement and the calculation were in goodagreement. The investigation in this paper will promote the development of the high power high repetition rate TEA CO, laser in our country.
