With the development of personal communication, the "burst mode" transmission techniques have recently received considerable attention. The "burst mode" transmission is widely applied in multiple access systems such as HFC network and wireless LAN. We also can expect more and more communication systems will support IP packet transmission, which means more and more communication systems including Beyond 3G mobile communication systems will have the characteristic of the "burst mode".As we know, CDMA technique is the key of the 3G mobile communication systems. We also believe CDMA will still play an important role in the next generation communication systems for its flexibility of MAC resource allocation. The multicarrier transmission known as OFDM has recently received considerable attention for its robustness to multipath selective fading and high bandwidth efficiency. It is also widely recognized as one of the key techniques in the next generation communication systems. From the above discussion, we can draw a conclusion that the burst CDMA and the burst OFDM techniques will receive more and more attentions in the future. So, studying on synchronization algorithm and implementation for CDMA and ODM receivers in burst mode has important significance.Chapter 1: Survey the fundamental and development of burst CDMA and burst OFDM transmissions.Chapter 2: Review the basic theory of signal recognition and parameter estimation, emphases on the derivation of Cramer-Rao lower bound for the synchronization parameters estimation of the burst CDMA and OFDM signals.Chapter 3: Confirm the synchronization strategy in the burst receiver; analyze the architecture of the preamble. The rest of the chapter then is divided into two sections. The first section studies the synchronization algorithm, implementation and performance in CDMA receiver in burst mode; the second section studies the synchronization algorithm, implementation and performance in OFDM receiver in burst mode.Chapter 4: Introduce a case of burst CDMA receiver designing, and review the projects experienced by the author.
