With stepping into the 21st century, the traditional CAD technology becomes rather matured and is developing towards a modern direction of being further integrative, intelligent, and collaborative. Meanwhile, an important characteristic of CAD technology generally distinguishes as pursuing the goal of easier operation, more economy, and higher efficiency through customization development. As a large routine engineering design work, the design of boiler product is not only complicated, time-consuming, strongly empirical, and heavily dependent on the experienced design cases, but also needs strict reliability and high economy; therefore, developing a specialized intelligent CAD system for boiler design is of great significance to improve design efficiency and quality, to reduce design cost, and to accumulate and share the intelligent fruits of the design.So far, little effort has been input to carry out boiler intelligent design in China and even worldwide. Only a very few scholars did some relevant work on intelligent design of particular part in boiler system, and still only a very few proposed some preliminary ideas about the system intelligent design. Based on the R&D experience in completing the Leading Project of CAD Applied Engineering during Chinese Ninth Five-Year Plan period - "Boiler CAD Application System" of Hangzhou Boiler Works, the dissertation, in the first place, explores the boiler intelligent design at the "system level" deeply. The main content of the dissertation is present as follows: Briefly introduces the foundation of software technology for boiler intelligent CAD research, i.e. the Object-oriented and Agent-oriented technology, and analyzes the principles, characteristics, relations, and differences of/between them; also, a graphical modeling language, UML, adopted in the dissertation is introduced. Cognizes and classifies the design activity; according to the characteristics of the boiler productive design, chooses Intelligent Routine Design (IRD) as the focus of attention and analyzes the technological theory and main methods of IRD; builds the multi-agent IRD software technology framework, and makes detailed study on the "Designers - IRD Agents" cooperative design process; moreover, proposes a content model of IRD agent, which embodies the corresponding product design knowledge representation model and could support those main IRD methods. Clarifies that "boiler is a kind of process system", and builds boiler's abstractprocess-system model. Based on in-depth survey and design review in some boiler factories; divides boiler project design into four sub-processes: project construction, project analysis, project evaluation, and project adjustment, and elaborates the designer's activity in these sub-processes respectively. Especially, to solve the functional heated calculation, which is the core work of boiler project analysis, the dissertation contributes a sequential modular iterative algorithm by referring to the theory of process system simulation. Based on the analysis of human design activities in boiler project design, the dissertation put forwards the concrete intelligent design methods that should be applied to each sub-processes of boiler project design respectively; builds the specialized multi-agent technology framework for boiler intelligent design, and defines a unified organizational relation model for boiler intelligent design agents. Besides, provides an example of constructing boiler intelligent design agent. Analyzes the requirements of developing boiler intelligent CAD system and composes the general design schema for the system construction. Furthermore, develops the prototype of the boiler intelligent CAD system by extending the background project of this dissertation - "Boiler CAD Application System".The research presented in the dissertation about the technology, methods, and models of boiler intelligent CAD fills the gap in this applied research field, and lays a valuable foundation for further research and development.
