The requirement of spatial location is one of the most essential requirements of humankind. The applications of spatial location in human daily life and production are broader and in-depth which exemplify that the requirement of spatial location is the essential requirement of humankind. Spatial query is one of the elementary ways to acquire spatial location information. It is the elementary function supplied by GIS and Spatial Database and used frequently by users. Natural spatial query language is the most important lingual form which realizes the spatial querying. Natural spatial query language is concerned by more and more researchers because that it is used simply and the description of spatial requirement is in accordance with codes of language.The interpreting mechanism is the premise to realization and application of natural spatial query language which includes many research contents such as the spatial knowledges, spatial segmenting, parsing and semantic analysis, etc. It is a work which is full of challenges. The thesis researches the interpreting mechanism of natural spatial query language and makes an experiment on it. The researches and innovations includes as follows:1. There are several problems of spatial querying classification that the angle of classification is simple and the standard of classification is indistinct. In consideration of those, the contents of spatial querying are concluded and classified from four angles such as spatial concept, geographic information, query language, manifestation, etc. which are based on the class of spatial querying are concluded and analyzed.2. The grammar rules of natural spatial query language are concluded. The researches on restrictions on natural spatial query language are imposed and several grammar restrict rules are made based on the grammar rules.3. The class and manifestation of knowledge are researched. The thesis concludes all kinds of spatial knowledge which used by natural spatial query language interpreting. Spatial knowledge is concluded as follows:1) The knowledge of geographic entity, spatial words and query words is concluded and the spatial dictionary is built by those knowledge. The spatial dictionary built near completely is the fundament of natural spatial query language.2) The patterns of spatial querying clause used frequently are concluded and defined. These patterns are used in segmenting and parsing in order to improve the correctness and efficiency because that those patterns can control and guide the process of segmenting and parsing.3) The grammar rules of natural spatial query language are concluded and designed. 4) The spatial semantemes involved in natural spatial query language are described in detail base on the ways of frame semantics which make the comprehending process of semantic knowledge simulate the understanding process.4. The algorithm and the idea of the word segmenting base on matching character string, comprehension and statistic are researched. A new algorithm of spatial segmenting and part-of-speech tagging based spatial querying patterns and spatial dictionary is designed. Unknown words are recognized by the algorithm.5. The parsing methods based on rules and statistics are researched. The advantages and shortcomings between those methods are also contrasted. Chart algorithm which belongs to parsing algorithm based on rules is used to do syntax analysis on natural spatial query language and supplies the result of parsing.6. The semantic analysis on natural spatial query language is carried out using frame semantics knowledge. The semantic analyzing process is carried out with an instance to illustrate how to simulate the understanding process of humankind.7. The supports on oriented-object techniques of RDBMS are researched. Based on those supports, SQL is extended to support spatial types and spatial functions. An object-relation spatial database is built using those spatial types and spatial functions.8. A prototype natural spatial querying system is built based on experiments on contents of natural spatial query language interpreting mechanism. The performance indexes of natural spatial querying system are counted and analyzed.The spatial knowledge concluded in thesis can be used not only in researches on natural spatial query language, but also in anthers research fields such as natural spatial relationship and spatial decision support system. The contents on natural spatial query language interpreting mechanism in the thesis supply a solution to realize natural spatial query language.
