It's been over a centurary since Chinese local teaching materials appeared. They have been marginalized but still existed through times, which demonstrates that local knowledge teaching materials have indispensable functions and values. Up till now, the previous researches are mostly confined to the history, textual analysis and experiences of local knowledge teaching materials and few have explored their functions and existing status.Within the functionalism paradigm, the research mainly uses fieldwork and survey Method, taking NingXia Hui Autonomous Region as a case. The researcher has collected, explored and causally and functionally analyzed the indigenous teaching materials in NingXia with integrative and specialized method, both longitudinally and cross-sectionally. While reorganizing the historical development of the local knowledge teaching materials, the research started from the following two aspects:national culture inheritance, national unity education. The representative field work sites were visited with deep investigation. The research examined the history and current situation of the local knowledge teaching materals in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and analyzed their causes and functions, trying to offer reference for the local knowledge teaching materal development in ethnic minority areas.Through investigation, local knowledge teaching materials have great significance either to individual and social development. From an individual development perspective, local knowledge teaching materials help to form and cultivate students'ethnic identity, local identity and national identity, and help to enhance students aesthetic judgment and improve students'adaptation competence to local society by offering them more living opportunities and skills. In the mean time, local teaching materials promote creativity, cooperation ability and reflective practice of the teachers in ethnic minority areas.From a social development perspective, local knowledge reading materials strengthen ethnic group unity and promote harmonious social development. The local knowledge reading materials also enhance the inheritance, selection, communication and innovation of local and national culture and help maintain a sustainable economical, cultural, and ecological development. They also help to promote campus culture.Local knowledge teaching materials have great existing significance with their own unique functions. However, influenced by value orientation, social system and subject quality, the "very significant" positive functions are neglected and tend to be recessive so that some dysfunctions are induced. However, compared with the positive functions, the dysfunctions of the local knowledge reading materials are weak and can be adjusted, controlled and tranformed but can't be neglected.Local knowledge teaching materials not only "base on the development of the students" also focus on the local society as well, which is the value proposition of the local knowledge teaching materials. When it is in conformity with the school educational goal, local knowledge teaching materials will survive in the school educational system. Only based on the local reality, local knowledge teaching materials will thrive in the local society.Based on the field work, the research put forward the following views: Local education system should be build with related theories, institutions and practice in an integrated, systematic and focused manner. The managerial system, financial system and evaluation system of the local knowledge teaching materials should be improved. A biological chain of the local knowledge teaching materials should be formed to promote a better cooperation between primary schools, secondary schools and universities to maximize and optimize the functions of local knowledge reading materials.
