The cross-border ethnic groups are universal phenomenon riffing in the world. The government, scholar, and people from all circles pay attention to the research on the groups. In the past the scholar studied the narrow definition of the cross-border ethnic groups more than the broad. In recent year more and more scholars show solicitude for the broad research. So the research on the cross-border ethnic groups has been changed from the issue about the nationalism and national self-determination to the issue of the acculturation and national identity. The cross-border ethnic groups lie in different countries. The different mainstream culture, economic policy, and political institutions could exert different influence on the different groups. As the cross-border ethnic groups, how to deal with the relationship between the mainstream culture and the ethnic minorities' culture, is an important thing for them. We must enhance studying the broad cross-border ethnic groups that is significative for us to learn the theory and solve the practical question. In this doctoral dissertation, the writer wants to show the character in different stage of the acculturation by using the theory of the acculturation, to discuss the process and outcomes of the acculturation on the basis of multidimensional model of the adaptation. We take the DunGans who emigrated from China to the Central Asia at the end of 19th century for an example, to discuss how to deal with the relationship between the mainstream culture and the national minorities' culture. The dissertation has eight parts:The first part is introductory chapter. The writer looks back the research about the cross-border ethnic groups, and indicate, on the one hand, that it is necessary to study the broad research field in the contemporary, on the other hand, that it is important to study the DunGans by using the theory of the ethnology. The second part discusses the circumscription of the cross-border ethnic groups and how did the DunGans become the cross-border living. So we could analyze the type and characteristic of the cross-border's DunGans. The third part tells the culture's structure, such as the Spiritual Culture, Material Culture, and so on. On the basis of the structure, we discuss the connection of the DunGans" culture and Hui nationalities" culture. Comparing the difference of two cultures, we could learn the affection of different cultural background to the groups living in different countries. Therefore, the DunGans culture has multi-cultural feature in multi-cultural Central Asia. The forth part discuss the multidimensional model of the adaptation. It tells us that the mainstream culture's attitude which affects the DunGans' culture in different period in Central Asia, such as the period of the imperial Russia, the Soviet Union, and the independence of the Central Asia's countries. The fifth part tells that the minorities groups would adapt the mainstream culture actively, so that they can integrate into the mainstream culture. But the acculturation has the character of the stage and level. The Material Culture which is the surrounding part entered into the mainstream culture firstly, such as language, economy, education and so on. That could enhance their viability in the circumstance of heterogeneous culture, and could not change the central Spiritual Culture of the minorities groups. The sixth part shows that the Cultural Inheritance plays an important role in the process of protecting the minority groups" traditional culture. The DunGans' communities, folkways and customs, religions belief, native language, that make the traditional culture strengthen. Cultural Continuity structure the DunGans' national spirit. The seventh part discuss the Cultural Inheritance are influenced by the relations between the different countries and the relations of the different branches of the cross-border ethnic groups. So the same cross-border ethnic group living in different countries would have multi-cultural character because of the influence of the different mainstream culture. The last part is the conclusion. The cross-border ethnic groups have the dual function in developing relationship between one state and another. On the one hand it can become the bridge developing the nations' economic and cultural connections. On the other hand it would be the danger to bring about the nationalism and the separatism. From the practice of the DunGans' acculturation and Cultural Continuity, we can learn that the cross-border ethnic groups should affirm the national border, form the awareness of the national, develop the he nations' economic and cultural connections, make a contribution to the country you belong to, that is the intent to research the acculturation and cultural continuity of the cross-border ethnic groups.
