This thesis studies the process of modernization of Hunan traditional education during the period from 1894 to 1929.The process of modernization is the most impetuous and profound changing in human history.As a part of upper structure,education transition is an important part of this process.Hunan province,the typical region of trational China,whose process of traditional education related to the tide of education transform from above to below in neoteric China,also,this process is result of compositive infection of social politics,economy and Huxiang culture,incarnates characteristics same to other regions of China,what's more,this process is the embodiment of features determined by social politics,economy and Huxiang culture in modern Hunan province.This thesis absorbs sufficiently from the current research result,from the angle of modernization view,probes into the interrelations of the transition of Hunan traditonal education and politics,economy,culture and other areas of modern Hunan,systemically generalizes the status,the characteristic and the function of this process.Moreover,the thesis tries to reveal the basic cause which embarrass Hunan education development nowadays and bring forward useful advice.The thesis is mainly composed by the below parts:The introduction part illustrates the origin and the meaning of this thesis,and makes out the definition on the educational modernization;indicates the thesis research speculation and research method.Chapter 1:The Tadional Education Before The Great Transform.This chapter selects Yuelu-Academy as a sample,analyse the development of Hunan tradional education before the start-up of modernization,discuss the relation between the Huxiang culture,Hunan intelligentsia and tradional education;Chapter 2:The First Round Oportunity of Hunan Tadional Education During The Period of Wuxu-Reform Movement.This chapter analyses socail situation of Hunan benifital to modernization after Jiawu Sino-Japan War.From the fact of Shiwu-Academy "Rise immediately,Crock up swiftly",the thesis try to search out the deep-seated causation which embarrass the process of modernization of Hunan traditional education;Charpter 3:From a passive henchman to a initiative propellent—the modern educational course of Hunan during the Period of the New Policies(1900-1911).This chapter probes into the development of new education of Hunan impulsed by new polices of that period,and it analyzes alienation and reversion in the course of the transformation of Hunan traditional education in terms of modernization..Chapter 4:Culmination of Hunan education and formation of Hunan modern educational system during the Early Period of the Republic of China.This chapter surveys the formation of modern educational system of Hunan in the background of political,economic and cultural transformation during the Early Period of the Republic of China.. Chapter 5:Hunan modern educationist groups and modernization of Hunan education. This chapter explores the characteristics of Hunan modern educationist groups and its effect on Hunan educational modernization.Chapter 6:Reflections on modernization of Hunan education.This chapter compares modernization of Hunan education with that of other provinces from the aspects of background,course and impetus;moreover,it also analyzes general characteristics of the course of Hunan modernization and reflects on strategies of modernization of Hunan education by considering historical and present events.
