The modern information science and technology, such as the multi-media and internet, has taken an all-round effect on the society, which is leading the human society into Information Age. The development of the Age is bound to set a new requirement upon the education and teaching in institutions of higher education. Modern IT enters the teaching field of institutions of higher education, it has made a great impact upon the aspects such as educational idea, teaching thought, training goal, teaching model, instruction methods and teaching organizational form. Under this influence, significant reforms will certainly take place in the teaching process of the institutions of higher education. The dissertation is to study the reform and operation mechanism in the teaching process of the institutions of higher education with Information Age as background.First of all, the dissertation analyzes the feature of this Age when the reform is taking place in the teaching process. According to the rule of the educational external relationships, holding the feature of social change and times development is the first thing of studying teaching process of the institutions of higher education. The dissertation point out that the rapid development of the information technology, the appearance of knowledge-based economy, the mass higher education and the coming of life-long learning society are the macroscopic backgrounds of the teaching process reform. After the entry into the 21st century, a times of information, the development of new science and technology, which is represented by the information science, will inevitably bring about the reform of the teaching process in higher education institutions. In the information times, knowledge and information is a kind of new form of wealth, which is characterized by the intellectual denseness and mental labors' absolute advantage over physical labors; The knowledge-based economy has brought about the ultimate reform in the idea of knowledge and the creation of knowledge is the need of the development; Mass higher education has made qualitative changes in the system of higher education and E-learning has bright prospects; Life-long education is the inevitable requirement of information social development, which needs the institutions of higher education have to play the role of participant and supporter.In the background, on the one hand, reform on traditional teaching is required, including the training goal and teaching ways and means; on the other hand, modern IT creates huge potential and condition for teaching process reform. Educational "4-pillar" theory(learning to know/learning to do/learning to live together/learning to be)has offered theoretical foundation for building up the education of 21st century. It is the most valuable guiding theory of the higher educational and teaching reform.Through the combination of history and reality, we can get more hint on studying the teaching process reform in the information times. Therefore, the paper is to use one chapter to review the transformation from the historical point of view. We can see that, from universities and colleges at Middle Ages to the modern ones, great changes have taken place in the aspects of either training goals, teaching contents and teaching models, or the relationship between higher education institutions and the society. We can also see that, the application of teaching media and the development of teaching technology was not merely a transformation of the teaching means, at the same time gave the impetus to the reform in models of teaching, methods of instruction and structures of class teaching, and to the update of teaching ideas and teaching theories in the long run. By looking over the history, we find that the reform of the teaching process in higher education institutions at Information Age has its historical inevitability.Then, how to analyze the reform of teaching process and its operational system, methodology appears to be very important.
