A Study Of China-Myanmar-India Trilateral Relationship After The Cold War

As neigbouring countries, both China and India are rising to new global powers, which is a unique chanllenge during their rising process to them. As the common neighbor of the two countries, Myanmar/Burma is suffering from the dual impact of this historic phenomenon. How to judge the trilateral relationship among China, Myanmar and India, to be more specific, the relationship between China and India with Myanmar, is the most important issue to resolve in the paper.Myanmar is of tremendous strategic values to rising China and India. As far as China is concerned, Myanmar plays an important role in maintaining surrounding peace and security and performing the vital strategic corridor, and so on. For India, Myanmar is of great strategic importance:it may help solve the problem of India's North-east of the separatist movement, balance China's driving southward, and fight for Indian regional hegemony. Both China and India shares a strong desire to develop bilateral relations with Myanmar.However, China and India are striving to develop friendly and cooperative relations with Myanmar, which must be coupled to its own national interests, that is, must be able to meet the actual needs of Myanmar's foreign policy. Based on the actual needs and challenges of Myanmar, China and India in their relations with Myanmar have both advantages and disadvantages. And both countries have more common interests than differences on Myanmar. First of all, it is the common fundamental interest that the two countries maintain the stability of Myanmar. Secondly, there are different competitive advantages between their bilateral relations with Myanmar. And then, the main problem between their relations with Myanmar is the lack of mutual strategic understanding and confidence, especially India has long suspected China of developing relation with Myanmar.
