National image is an important issue in the process of China's rise. It has and will have profound impact on the time, space and pattern of China's rise. The thesis attempts to find the inherent national image formation mechanisms through national image theory parsing, trying to strip systematically the influential variables on national image with level analysis and dialyze its essence as well as inner logic, affiliating with reality and analyzing the "Spiral of Silence" of China threat theory, putting forward corresponding public diplomacy countermeasures and suggestions. The thesis has 190,000 words and eight chapters, which adopts the linearity structure of "Forward→Theory framework→History retrospect→Variables analysis→Practice→Policy suggestions".The forward is the introduction of the thesis, which explains the academic and practical values of the subject, makes relevant concepts definition and documents review, as well as narrates the research methodology and research restrictions.Chapter 1 is the theoretical framework construction part, which forms a theoretical framework centering on the national image psychological analysis system and two dynamic selection processes on the basis of reviewing traditional theory frameworks of national image. The chapter orientates three main variables which have impact on national image, matting the outspreading of the following text.Chapter 2 is the historical review part of the thesis. On the basis of summing up the western traditional cognition of China's image, this chapter combs up the US perception of China's national image into four historical periods according to chronological order, which constructs the historical basis for the following text.Chapter 3-5 is the outspreading part of the thesis, which adopts the methodology of variable analysis to orientate the effects and status ofvariables in the national image forming process, penetrating in three different levels and interpreting separately. Chapter 3 analyzes the relationship between national character and national image, orientating China's macroscopic national image in US, narrating national analogy and image political effects, interpreting the logical relations between national character and national image by case study. Chapter 4 analyzes the relationship between national behavior and national image, orientating the influence of inner national behaviors on nation image, explaining the national image handling principles under crisis and inquiring into national behaviors' adjustable dimensions problem. Chapter 5 analyzes the relationship between international status and national image. It analyzes economy and military, the most important standards of international status separately, and narrates the image paradox that brought up by international status changes.Chapter 6 is the part of combining theory with practice, analyzing the "Spiral of Silence" of China threat theory and emphasizing the importance of public diplomacy in succession. The conclusion is the summarizing part of the thesis, demonstrating the necessity and feasibility of National Image Strategy, summing up the whole thesis and making corresponding policy suggestions.
