This dissertation is an industrial organization approach to banking industry mainly studies the theory, policy and supervision in banking industry, which is focused on the structure, behavior, and performance of banking industry. Including the introduction, the whole dissertation is divided into eight chapters. The introduction part, which is the chapter one, brings forward the thesis of this dissertation, gives a summary of the research content, the methodology, and the main viewpoints. In Chapter 2, we studies the theoretic framework of industrial organization theory, in which the SCP of banking industry has been reinterpreted. Integrating the study of banking industry into industrial organization expands the scope of industrial organization. In Chapter 3, we studies the concentration of the banking industrial organization, including the concentration theory, the concentration history, the concentration degree of foreign countries, the reasons and approaches of the concentration of the banking industrial organization. This chapter also studies market structure types, the transformative rules of the market structure, and the correlative problems in China. This Chapter also provides an approximate measure -concentration ratios-for the degree of competition.Chapter 4 studies entry and exit barriers of the banking industrial organization, including entry and exit barriers theory, entry and exit barriers of foreign countries, and the correlative problems in China.Chapter 5 studies the market behavior, both in theory and practice. This chapter also studies the correlative problems in China.Chapter 6 studies performance of the banking industry, especially on the economies of scale theory, product diversity theory, and performance measurement. Specifically, examining recent data allows considering whether there is evidence of efficiency or other gains from the market structure. Using data from the 1990s to extend existing analysis of pricing strategy, banking mergers, and other market behavior, this chapter examines the performance and value effects of banking organization acquisitions. Examines the profit outlook of banks worldwide, and also in China. In Chapter 7 and Chapter 8, we focused on a number of policy issues such as the policy to reform the banking industrial organization, including the objective mode, the countermeasures to reform the concentration, entry & exit barriers, and economies of scale. Scale economies are an important policy consideration in banking supervision. The basic framework for institutional-focused supervision in China should be developed by the effective measurement to determine and communicating the overall condition of the banking organization and addressing supervisory concerns by market discipline.
