Gu Dingchen顾鼎臣was the Minister from the reign of Emperor Hong Zhi弘治to Emperor Jia Jing嘉靖of the Ming dynasty. As a respectable lecturer, he became a member of the Cabinet in 1538, and got his highest reputation in 1539, when he was empowered to manage national affairs during the tour of Jia Jing emperor in the southeast of China. However, he was immediately forgotten, because of flattering and incompetence.Based on documents mainly in Ming and Qing dynasties, and based on relevant research, This paper aims to re-analyze the history of Gu Dingchen, which consists of five parts: (1)Gu Dingchen's family and life experience, (2)the Lecturer Gu Dingchen, (3)Gu Dingchen and southern tax reform , (4) Gu Dingchen and Kunshan city, (5)Gu Dingchen and his clan. At the end, The paper places his actions and behaviors in the traditional political vision to inspect.Has been born in a declining family, not only has Gu Dingchen the quality and aspirations of the traditional scholar, but also has practical experience and ability. He has always insisted the position of the traditional scholar, and very well uphold the ideals and as a scholar, during the reign of Emperor Zheng De and Emperor Jia Jing. In particular, he was respected by Emperor Jia Jing, so that he can succeed to avoid the political disputes, and realize the ideal of teaching the young Emperor Jia Jing to be a wise emperor, and he ideal of assisting the emperor in governing the empire, mainly on the tax reform and the construction of Kunshan City.Based on the author's research, it holds that Gu Dingchen is a model of the chinese traditional scholar, who had good training and keened for his political ideal. It holds that, through this study, the paper will be a very interesting attempt for restoration of classical political philosophy perspective on historical research.
