Chekhov is known as a great realistic writer, yet who radically changes the course of Russia's realism, either in the ways of thinking or in the artistic practice. This paper is expected to make an attempt to interpret uncertainty in his innovation by borrowing the theories from Acceptance Aesthetics and Hermeneutics, which are supposed to shed light on it.At the turn between the 19th and 20th century, a variety of social thinkings sprang up in Russia, vying to occupy the people's mind. Each school of them assumed to have mastered the truth which could be applied to every spheres of the society, undoing the complex social problems with a fixed way of thought. Chekhov, with his sharp insight, alerted that all the so-called thoughts are nothing but a signboard or label, upheld by those narrow-minded cliques whose prejudice was based on their own interests and who took such partial"truth"as their artistic material. The poetics of uncertainty is just to demonstrate that some particular people in some given circumstances work out some particular conclusions accordingly. Therefore, their conclusions, due to the uncertain factors such as individuals and circumstances, take on the partial and uncertain characters.The dissertation falls into six chapters, including the prelude and the conclusion. The prelude is involved the background, implication, significance and value of the uncertainty. In Chapter One, a retrospective documentation is briefed through the last century based on the previous researchers, uncovering that Chekhov has placed a complex and manifold implication into the instant moods, mentality, subtle interpersonal relations and daily routines as well. In Chapter Two, analysis is undertaken how the characters in his novels break through all the settled norms, who can neither be defined by the external professionalized characteristics of capitalism nor by the stereotyped convention; on the contrary, who are"average individuals"devoid of the certain world outlooks, feeling their way in the darkness. In Chapter Three, analysis is undergone for what artistic techniques are employed to create the uncertain literary settings. The characters in his novel are lack of the origin of their thinking, so that the conflicts between the characters stand on no certain principles and the solutions to them are beyond the certain scenarios. As a result, one cannot find the didactic conclusion concerning the given morals in his novels, but more ever-emerging uncertain problems, instead. The idealistic happiness is even supposed to be an illusion. Chekhov, on the one hand, disavows the parochial happiness obtained by the individuals; on the other hand, let alone his heroes pursue their happiness unremittingly. Meanwhile, Russia, also calls for a hero, who matches himself to this vast stretch of land, opening up his own future. In Chapter Four, a deep insight into his root artistic thinking of his uncertainty poetics is provided, pointing out that he disavows either absolutization or specilization, and keeps the principle"dealing with the specific cases respectively". The writer, setting the specific problems as the background, elicits the readers to break through the settled model of expectation, and to pursue the unborn truth by carrying out their independent thinking. The conclusion is to make a point that though Chekhov has proved the partiality of the given truth, he does not disavow the existence of a true truth on its ontological sense and the ever-lasting significance of pursuit of the truth.
