This research study seeks to examine how Hong Kong teleplays adapt from classical Chinese literature, covering discussion on the various forms, contents and cultural characteristics,in particular differences from adaptation by teleplays produced in Mainland China.Based on three levels, namely text forms, social institution and cultural morphology, this study analyzes Hong Kong teleplay adaptation in five dimensions including production, narrative mode.evolvement of adaptation concept and style, interaction with Hong Kong movies, and influence of cultural identity and viewpoint. In the first dimension, production techniques set a frame to the fundamental form of expression and characteristics of teleplay adaptation, while the system of commercial production decides the choice of classical novels, the theme of adaptation, and the pattern of plots. The "story","discourse" and "characters' language" in Hong Kong classical Chinese literature teleplays also demonstrate narrative characteristics that are different from the originals. In the second dimension, the concept of adaptation is closely connected with the viewing patterns of audience and the competition among television programmes, from "absolute faithfulness" to breaking further and further away from the originals,to putting heavy emphasis on creativity and the deconstruction of entertainment. Movies and teleplays adapted from classical Chinese Literature interact and mutually benefit each other.Teleplay adaptation has developed with much reference to Hong Kong movies. The wave of creativity in the Hong Kong film industry was being popularized by teleplays, which had in turn commonized such creativity. In the third dimension,Hong Kong has maintained many Chinese traditional moral concepts and customs that no longer exist in other Chinese regions. This has largely built on the city's cultural identity founded on its economic growth and its advanced operating system. In addition, values of the middle class also make a great impact on teleplay adaptation. All in all, production techniques, the system of commercial production, interaction between different media, and cultural morphology are major influential factors impacting Hong Kong teleplay adaptation, their influence on the adaptation of classical Chinese literature by future Hong Kong teleplays will continue.
