Zhou Dynasty founded a state with farming, and the farming and sericulture gave birth to its cultural origins. Suiren made fire by boring a hole in wood, Youchao put up the wood to build a house, Fuxi turned silkworms to silk, and Shennong planted the five cereals and taught the knowledge on silk and flax, thereupon, the aspect that the farming and sericulture are the base on which to build up the nation was gradually improving. ZhouGong's book sincerely expressed the expectation which his feudal officials could understand that farm work was so difficult to do and how the common people spent a year without clothes. Mengzi completely stated that the kingly way began with tens of mu fields and mulberry trees beside walls, and it was impossible that the empire could not be ruled over if the common people were neither hungry nor poor. So it was the rules of all ages that the emperor personally ploughed and the empress engaged in sericulture herself. The rules of generation after generation goes back to ancient times, which are the powerful current of the culture.The rich and colourful symbol of the silk culture becomes folk custom when it embodies among the people, and it becomes material culture, system culture, behaviour culture and psychological culture when it spreads among scholars. In the course of the history in which it flew past and spread over four thousand years, the new cultural essential factors are unceasingly joined in, and conflicts and fusions move in cycles. In the lively state, the silk culture passed through the farming civilization and entered the industrial civilization. It not only kept the factors of the traditional culture, but also merged the factors of the modern culture. During these time, by influencing family, the function of education further influenced country.Two research stages are vertically delimited in this thesis: one is the inheritance of the silk culture during the period from Shang and Zhou Dynasties to the period of the farming civilization in the late Qing Dynasty. Large amounts of silk fabrics in the period of Yinshang Dynasty were discovered in the north of China ( Henan, Hebei and Shanxi Provinces ), silk was also found in the site of Qianshanyang ( during the Liangzhu culture period ) in Zhejiang Province in the south, which prove that the appearance of silk can go upstream to the period of remote ages. The other is the inheritance of the silk culture from the modern times till now, namely in the period of the industrial civilization. From the late 19th century till now, the function of the education in the inheritance of the silk culture has changed obviously, and school education began instead of teaching by personal example as well as verbal instruction in the way of the traditional family workshop. The studay logic of the paper carried out from the following four aspects: First,to analyze the producing mechanism of the silke culture.This aspect being based on the theory of cultural producing, inspecting the unique natural environment,the humannities environment and the silk culture remains of the Jialing River basin,and inquiring into the function,turning common matters to custom,of education in the silk culture, I reach a conclusion that the silk became the support of families,communities and countries.Second,accordng to the frame of the cultural composition,this aspect is based on the theory that the culture is a signal system, systematizing the symbole of silke culture in this paper and dividing the silk culture into the manifestation of material,language,system and science.This section also systematicly analyze the signal expressing and connotation of silk culture and inspect the expressing of optional function and educational function.Third,to analyze the way of inheritance of silk culture. Silk culture being placed in the agricultural community and the vision of industrial society,this section is based on the function of culture and conflict theory ,analyzing the silk cultural inward and outward means of transmission. The paper points out that there are two majore factors making the silk culture changed greatly.They are conmmunicating with the foreign culture actively and being impacted by industrial civilization.Finally,the educational fuction in the process of silk cultural heritage is concluded.Fourth, to conclude the multi-function of education appearing in the inheritance of silk culture. This section is based on the theory of the social function of education, analyzing the following educational functions in the inheritance of silk culture: the social controlling function, the economic supporting function and the cultural immersing function, etc. systematizing and analyzing the school education on silkwarm and mulbery,the education of silk industry and the education of silk technology in modern times ,and conclusion is drawn that the modern silk culture was passed on by the school education and furthermore the silk culture has new connotation.This thesis mainly uses the research methods which combines the literatural law with the empirical investigation. Through collecting and sorting out a vast amount of archaeological materials, and historical documents materials, I made a relatively systematic grasp about the traditional silk culture, at the same time had a clear understanding about the present situation of the ancient silkworm areas in Jialing River basin. Investigating the silkworm area of Jialing River basin, on the basis of interviewing the sericulturists and the sericulture operators, I selected the group sampling method and made enclosed questionnaires which established the questions from 5 dimensions. Spssl3.5 was used on statistics and the findings explained the wanishing of the element of the traditional silk culture, the state of the modern silk culture and its problems,etc.In the end, this thesis thinks that:Firstly, education embodies the functions of selecting, spreading and creating from the various angles in the inheritance of silk culture. In the farming society, the ideal society of "the inheritance of the farming and studying" has great vitality. However, because the core of the modern silk culture has turned to science and industry, and the traditional silkworm-keeping in rural areas came under the great attack. Sericulturists are needed to be strengthened the education of the modern culture to adapt to the building of the ideal society of "the inheritance of the farming and studying" in the new situation.Secondly, besides, as the most long-standing, splendid and distinctive composition in the Chinese national culture, silk culture should be protected and developed. It is the important reason that the Chinese nation can stand among the world nations, and it is also the value which this thesis chose the research subject.There are two creative points in this thesis:First, the angel of choosing studying objects blazes new trails. The previous studies were carried on from the angels of silk industry, silk art, silk technology and silk trade, etc. but it is the beginning in our country that this thesis studied systematicly its producing mechanism, composition of the symbol system, changes and spread, etc. from the angel of silk culture, and the study of the educational functions of the inheritance of silk culture was carried out.Secondly, the gathered materials in the fieldwork are originally creative. I chose the silkworm areas in Jialing River basin to carried out the investigation, collected the rich firsthand materials, and it laid a good foundation for the future thorough research.
