Isang Yun (1917-1995), Korean-German composer, has a special position in the worldmusic circles of 20th century. Yun's orchestral work Reak win out in Europe In 1966, from then on, his composition technique and his idea of Main Tone received more and more attention in Europeand then well known around the world. What's the theory of Main Tone? Where did it come from?As a kind of composition techniques, why the Main Tone influenced by western compositiontechnique, but highly different from it? The author considered that Main Tone belong to thoughtcategory, it epitomized in the process of closing arbitrarily various. That means the Main Tone notonly an idea, but also a technique, microcosmic and macroscopic, nonobjective and concrete.These embody essence of Main Tone, and therefore, for study angle and research method ofYun's works will be quite different from the way of other western composers as well as their works.This article includes three chapters. Chapter 1, Isang Yun and Main Tone, mainly discussedthe Main Tone with its origination of ideology, culture and technique, as well as Yun's individualexperience that influence to his creation. Chapter 2, The Periods of Isang Yun's Works. The authordivided Isang Yun's works in two period, East Asian period (initiate of Main Tone) and Europeanperiod (the developing of Main tone). Chapter 3, an analysis of Yun's Symphony No.2. Through onputting special stress on analyzing the Symphony No.2 and combination the principle of YinYang, the author further discussed the main characteristics of Yun's creation in his later period. Isang Yun and his music developed in the process of collision, dialogue and amalgamationbetween western culture and eastern one. That the East and West just like the two poles of Yinand Yang, they correlated, interacted and could not be separated from each other in his music.
