In this thesis, we choose the Buddhist Scriptures ShiSongLv(十诵律) as the main studying subject, which is interpreted by YaoQin interpreting association during A.D.404-413. At the same time, combining other linguistic materials, we analyze thirteen semantic fields, which is referred in M.Swadesh's primary words, standing for thirteen common verb sense. On one hand, we investigate their distribution in the same period. On the other hand, we research their development during the long history. By doing this, we try to summarize the reason and rule of those common verbs, altogether there being forty verbs concerned. At the beginning, we describe the distribution of those words in ShiSongLv(十诵律), then compare with the mainland contemporary materials, with an order to avoid serious deviation caused by the characteristic of this material. Based on this, we describe the diachronic development of the words in every semantic field and explore the development of those main words as well as the semantic field itself.Altogether, this thesis is divided into seven parts:Firstly, we generally introduce several questions involved in this article. They are just as the follows: the material and its present studying status; the significant value of ShiSongLv(十诵律); the present studying situation of related area, such as the vocabulary study of Buddhist Scriptures in mediaeval times, the study of common words, and the study of semantic fields in Chinese traditional language; the directing theories and methods used in this thesis as well as the studying purpose of this thesis. Secondly, we basically discuss words in the following four semantic fields. They are respectively "sit", "stand", "lie" and "walk". However, because of similarity between "sleep" and "lie", we choose to talk about the semantic field of "sleep" just in this chapter.Thirdly, we mainly talk about the semantic field of "die", which contains two central parts, namely, "kill" and "die".Fourthly , we chiefly talk about the semantic field of "eat", which contains two central parts, namely, "eat" and "drink". However, we don't deal with such actions as "chaw" and "swallow" since they related to definite position of human body.Fifthly, we basically talk about the semantic field of "apperceive", which also contains two central parts, namely, "look" and "hear". Besides, we discuss the especial semantic field of "aware".Sixthly, we talk about the semantic field of "burn" and analyze the central members belong to it.At the end, we summarize the whole thesis. Based on the above discussion, we analyze the facts from four aspects. They are the contemporary distribution of these semantic fields, the historical development of every semantic field, the contemporary distribution of the members in each semantic field, the historical development of every word in each semantic field. In a word, in this thesis, we resolve to review the evolution of some common words, thus to reveal the inner relationship among the vocabulary system. However, in practical investigation, we find that the relationship among vocabulary is very complex and the reason which caused the development of these words are complicate as well. As a result, we only choose several groups of words to make a complete description. At the same time, because of the limitation of studying material and studying method, the description is somewhat superficial. Nevertheless, through our study, we hope to provide some beneficial reference for the study of Chinese common words.
