The thesis is about the development of the theme on willow and aesthetic representation. And the thesis is divided into two parts, and there are eleven chapters.The first part including six chapters is mainly about the flourish of the writings on willow and the development of the theme on willow:Willow is an important theme and image of Chinese Classical Literature. The theme of Willow has centuries-old history, and has many kinds of forms. There are many writings on Willow. Since Han-tang dynasty, ode on Willow in Han dynasty, the singing verse of picking up a willow branch and the singing verse of willow branch are very important parts of the theme on willow.The authorities in Pre-qin dynasty had referred to willow, which only was a medium of comparison. People in this time paid great attention to willow's utility value and little attention to willow's aesthetic value. People attached great importance to willow's biologic character of early germinating, quick growth and bloomy life. Ode on Willow appeared in Han dynasty, which willow was described at length. Ode on Willow embodied willow's bloomy life and accelerated the emergence of the poem on willow. Ode on Willow included three phases. Many writings occurred during the period from Han dynasty to Jin dynasty, little writings during the period from Tang dynasty to Song dynasty, and lots of writings during the Ming-qing dynasty. The music of picking up a willow branch included three kinds of music which was hengchui music, xianghe music and qingshang music. Hengchui music is most closely related to willow all of the three kinds of music. The singing verse of picking up a willow branch is mainly dealed with women's missing their lover and soldier's missing their family at sight of willow, which strengthened the connection between willow and missing.The singing verse of willow branch came from the singing verse of picking up a willow branch. The singing verse of picking up a willow branch mainly described willow, which is an important part of willow literature. If Ode on Willow emphasizes particularly on describing willow and the singing verse of willow branch on expressing one's emotion, the singing verse of willow branch is the both.From Pre-qin Period to Han and Tang Dynasty, willow first was considered to be a northern image and then to be a southern image. The transaction resulted from as follows: the decline of environment in the north, the transfer of center from the north to south on economy and culture, and the change of willow's variety. Willow, as an image on Jiangnan, is the symbol of abundant and beautiful plants, the femininity of Jiangnan, and the ethos full of enjoyments.The second part including six chapters is about the research on the color character and the aesthetic effect of the image of willow:Willow is described at length because of the appearance of lots of writings on willow. Willow's outer character is the most important object of the writings, and is also the base of willow's emotional and representative signification. From Pre-Qin Period to Han and Tang Dynasty, people first paid attention to willow's whole character then to detailed character, first outer then inner character. At the same time, willow was considered to be strong first, then to be tender. Moreover, willow was the symbol of missing one's lover and family and leaving each other. It also had many representative significations. During Wei-jin dynasty, willow was often regarded to be a celeb. Since Taoyuanming, willow was often considered to be an anchoret, and to be a yang girl up to Tang dynasty, and to be a demirep and dog from middle-late Tang dynasty. Catkin is an important theme and image of Chinese Classical Literature. The writing of poem on Catkin went though a process from being similar in shape to being alike in spirits.There are many classic images during the development of Chinese Classical Literature on willow, such a willow of zhangtai, willow of palace, willow of suidi, willow of baqiao. Willow of zhangtai is the symbol of anchoret, and willow of palace is the symbol of nation's perdition, and willow of baqiao is the symbol of leaving each other. Willow of palace is planted around palace, which has more privilege than other willows, so it is meant acquiring of empire's appreciation. Especially, willow of palace and willow of suidi were often described, and had become specific theme, and had formed immobile mode. The appearance of the theme and image on Willow is based on willow's widely distributing and broad utilizing.
