| "Xiangtuzhi", a kind of native history and geography of elementary school originated in thelate Qing dynasty, is also one kind of special genres in local gazetteer family. The reformation ofteaching policies in that period demanded the local governments to compile "Xiangtuzhi" (nativehistory and geography), teach local history and geography knowledge to the teenagers inelementary schools. The central government also devised the framework for this purpose, whichimproved the compilation of "Xiangtuzhi" (native history and geography) greatly.This paper, based on this kind of books and other documents, discusses the historicalbackground of the those books, researches the frame style, the context style and their changes withtime goes by, analyses the presentation of "love of hometown","patriotism" in those books, so tostrengthen and deepen the understanding of those presentation by cases studies.The first chapter discuss the origination of "Xiangtuzhi" (native history and geography). Withthe development of teaching ideals of west European countries, more and more teaching expertssuggested native education to teenagers, and this kind of idea was absorbed by Japan, then adoptedby Qing government which at that time tried to reform to strengthen the "patriotism"and "loyaltyto emperor". For this purpose, the government released some decrees and a framework to directthe compilation.The second chapter presents the warm responses of different groups of intellects. Localgovernment officials and gentries is the major part, teachers and students the second, then otherintellects from such academic organization as "guoxue bao cun hui"and "Nanshe". Different styleof books represented difference of the area characters. The government censored those booksdiscreetly. The content of folk problem in a "Xiangtuzhi" (native history and geography) almostaroused a riot.The third part of this paper deals with four cases studies. Four editors declared their ownopinions on local matters in their books, which rested with their career, their living backgroundsand personal academic interesting.The fourth chapter analyses the thinking resource of the different opinions abundant in"Xiangtuzhi" (native history and geography). The purpose of "Xiangtuzhi" (native history andgeography) is to cultivate and foster the patriotism sprits and loyalty to kingdom, but differentopinions appeared. In fact, using the same words, editors expressed their different expectation.Those books showed a colourful panaroma of that time.The fifth chapter reviews the "Xiangtuzhi" (native history and geography) after the revolutionof 1911.The government of Republic of china emphasized the native education too, so thecompilation of "Xiangtuzhi" (native history and geography) is even popularized. But at that time,native education was not restrict to teenagers, but opened to the public.The last part attached this paper is a booklist of Xiangtuzhi (native history and geography),and some abstracts of those books. |
