An important characteristic of novels in late Qing dynasty was that newspapers and periodicals became their main media. Novels in newspapers and periodicals were the indispensably important composed parts in late Qing dynasty. From the point of view of newspapers and periodicals, the study for novels in late Qing dynasty was complied with the actual circumstance of novels' development. The total amount of novels in late Qing dynasty was 737, which were published in Shen Bao, Sin Wan Pao, Eastern Times and the National Herald (Shanghai). They provided support in quantity for my research. The foundation of my research was also based on them. The dissertation was divided into six chapters to discuss:Chapter one analyzed and studied the reasons of formation and the general situation for novels in newspapers and periodicals. The chapter mainly discussed the change of novels' statue, the development of journalism, the improvement of technology of printing and the cultivating of readers' market, which were main reasons why novels appears in newspapers and periodicals. The chapter studied the situation of these novels that published in newspapers and periodicals by foreigners and Chinese separately. According to my statistic, only from 1898 to 1911 there were at least 272 kinds of newspapers and periodicals that had published novels, not including those newspapers and periodicals specialized for novels and literatures.Chapter two discussed the column and the types of novels established in newspapers and periodicals. The newspapers established novel column, which indicated novels published in newspapers and periodicals in late Qing dynasty was a common phenomenon. However, novels did not appear corresponding relation with the column. The phenomenon expressed the change of novels' statue and concept. When newspapers published novels, they attached a great variety of type label to these novels, which showed great change for corresponding novel types. These labels provided a new approach to the alteration and innovation of traditional novels when analyzing novels published in newspapers and periodicals. Types of these novels were abundant, but their classification was much intermixed, which reflected the blurry concept of novels. Chapter three focused on contents and forms of these novels published in newspapers and periodicals. The most remarkable characteristic of domestic short storied in content was intensity attention and criticism for reality. The language was mainly classical Chinese, presented structure layout of cross section. Most of domestic river novels were social novels revealing social true features with odd phenomena that became main stream of social novels. Satiric and intuitionistic names of domestic river novels and characters were significant token of novels in late Qing dynasty. But their structure had little change. Most of them showed connected speciality of short stories. Other typical novels were still based on structure. Translated novels brought new types and characters of style. They had much influence for formation of domestic novels. But the translated novels published in newspapers and periodicals at that time also had much deficiency.Chapter four discussed the interactive relations between news and novels. At the beginning of newspaper origination, news used many literarily writing styles. The literature track was very much strong. Some of news was actually novels. Along with the massive appearance of novels in the newspapers, the contents and writing styles of novels were obviously influenced by news.Chapter five was concerned with the authors of novels published in newspaper. The chapter analyzed the reasons why many literati joined into the novel writing. It was thought that newspapers played a vital role in cultivating vocational novelist.Chapter six studied the promulgation of novels published in newspaper. The chapter analyzed the modes of novels' issue. It was thought that newspapers were the intermedia to contact readers and novels. In the meantime, the market also had very tremendous influence to these novels.
