Abstract/Summary:
Since the beginning of the 20th century, large amounts of Chinese cultural relics through the ages have been excavated with the development of archaeology. As Guowei Wang put it, "The emergence of new modes of academic research can often be attributed to new findings in related fields." The value of the new findings lies in that they cast new light on academic issues, that they open up new territories and that they help to bring about new methods in academic research. The scholars' investigation of the old academic issues, armed with new documents, has promoted the academic activities in an unprecedented fashion. Since the excavations are mostly related with calligraphy, this is especially true of the calligraphic research. Moreover, the enormous excavations have greatly enlarged the vision of the calligraphers, revised their understanding of the classics and accordingly promoted the contemporary calligraphic creation.Yinke Chen once said, "The academic research of any times must have its own new materials and new issues. It's the new academic trend to exploit the materials to solve the issues. " This dissertation, based on the new archaeological findings, tries to conduct a comprehensive reflection of the studies in the theory, history and creation of calligraphy, and to sum up the new achievements in calligraphic research and creation facilitated by multi-evidences of unearthed artifacts, documents, etc.This dissertation is divided into five chapters. This first chapter also serves as the introduction, and therefore it mainly introduces the purport of the dissertation and the methods adopted. Section One explains the relationship between new materials and new academic topics. Historically, the discovery of new materials has often led to the development new study areas. Archaeological discoveries since the beginning of the 20th century have opened up new fields of calligraphic study and brought about new issues, both of which have done much to enlarge the vision and to promote the emergence of new paradigms of the calligraphic study.
