As one of the Wu jing Zheng yi 五经正义 (Rectifications of the Meanings of the Five Classics), Zhou yi Zheng yi 周易正义 (Rectifications of the Meanings of Zhou yi) occupies a peculiar position in the history of the Yi studies and even in the history of the Confucian Classics studies of the Tang Dynasty (618-907). In the Preface, Kong Yingda 孔颖达 (574-648), who compiled this book, expressed this compilation was based upon Wang Bi's 王弼 (226-249) interpretations and followed Confucian thought as model. Because Wang Bi interpreted Zhouyi by Lao zi 老子 and Zhuang zi's 庄子 thought of the Daoist school, Zhou yi Zheng yi is generally inclined to integrating Daoism and Confucianism into one. In regard with its attribute in the Yi-ology, it succeeded Wang Bi's metaphysical tradition which stresses the philosophical connotations conceived in Zhouyi and adopted considerable elements from the image-numberology, taking both philosophical connotations and image-numberology into consideration, and inspired the Yi studies of the Song Dynasty (960-1279), exerting a methodological guidance to the hermeneutics of the Song Dynasty scholars who attached importance to both the Principle and image-number.This dissertation is composed of seven parts in which there are five chapters in the main body. The Outline concisely introduces the academic aims of Zhou yi Zheng yi and its position in the history of the Yi studies; the first chapter explicates its image-number thought, which is the most impressive part surpassing Wang Bi's thought on Yi; the second chapter discusses its thought on "position" and "ruling line(s)", which have been emphasized by both the image-number and philosophical schools; the third chapter expounds its idea on "timeliness" and "virtue", which is stressed more by the philosophical school and a conspicuous part succeeding Wang Bi and Yi Zhuan's 易传 thought; the fourth chapter elaborates its cosmology and some philosophical categories related, further revealing its "emphasis on both the root and branches", a further...
