This dissertation is research on Xiang's calligraphy connoisseurship and collection in Jiaxing, late Ming dynasty. It contains five chapters.Charter one mainly reviews the family background of Xiang's calligraphy connoisseurship and collection. The Xiang's was a big feudalistic family with good tradition. The family background offered the offspring advantage for calligraphy research. We can say that Xiang's calligraphy collection is the result of the family's long time accumulation on politics, economy and culture.Chapter two talks about the age background of the Xiang's calligraphy connoisseurship and collection. It emphasized on two aspects. One is on the politics and culture, which referred that the weak royal collection offered private collection space and the advocation for artistic vogue brought along the rise of collection. The other is on the economy, which referred that the exorbitant taxes and miscellaneous levies promoted people to change investment into collection, and the profit of collection ulteriorly stimulated the flourish of the collection.Chapter three is about the characteristic of the calligraphy activities in Ming dynasty by means of analyzing the Xiang's collection. This chapter mainly arranges the recordation on calligraphy collection which appeared in the books of the past dynasties. It also counts the amount and the names of the Xiang's calligraphy collection, and adds a great amount of unknown collection. By means of analyzing the collection, we got two points of view. On the one hand, the Xing's attention to unknown works showed the special interests. On the other hand, the great amount collection just because the people in that period advocated authentic work. By way of analyzing the process of the collection, we can see the movement of the calligraphy management in the late Ming dynasty. On the one hand, people didn't think profit was shame any more. On the other hand, the literators worked as brokers actively. All the above things deeply reflected the movement of social culture and economy in that society.Chapter four is about the research on the Xiang's calligraphy connoisseurship and collection and communication. The Xiang's had great mount and high quality collection. During the course of the appraisement to the masterpieces of painting and calligraphy, with the intercourse among many masters of calligraphy, connoisseurs, and literates with remarkable artistic achievement, an artistic achievement and a fixed culture group came into being. This chapter analyzed the reciprocity of culture group and the Xiang's collection by two aspects.
