The figures who are well known for their studies on the imagery and munberology of the Han (206 B.C.-220 A.D.) Yi tradition are represented by the scholars of Hui Dong, Zhang Huiyan, and Jiao Xun in the Qing dynasty (1616-1919), and Li Jingchi as well as Shang Binghe in modern times. Since 1970s, the studies on the imagery and numberology of the Han Yi tradition have achieved a lot and are flourishing. But these studies are not well enough. We should stand on the historical background in which the 17 studies and the Confucian Classics studies interact, absorb the precursors' attainment, draw reference from the excavated documents, particularly the Yi Zhuan (Commentaries on Zhouyi) copied on silk unearthed at Mawangdui, abide by a method combining the history and logic, history and reality, textual research and philosophical connotations, received documents and unearthed materials, to probe into the development of the Han Yi-ology and its academic ideology so as to establish a new vision, new methodology and deepen as well as push forward the studies on the Han Yi-ology, even the whole Yi-ology history.The original Text and Commentaries of Zhouyi are the origin and source of the Yi-ology culture. As an important stage in the history of the Yi-ology development, the Han Yi tradition succeeded the Yi studies of the pre-Qin period and stimulated the Yi studies of the Song dynasty (960-1279). The imagery and numberology occupy the main stream with the meaning and pattern school and the Yellow Emperor & Lao zi Daoist school of Yi as branches, the studies of the Yi in the Han dynasty are rich and have exerted significant influences upon later generation's Yi studies.The prosperity and development of the Han Yi-ology are closely related to the politics, cultural trends of thought, and academic ideology of the Han dynasty. Beliefs in spirits and immortality and the over-popularity of the theology conceived in the apocrypha strengthened the correlations between the beliefs in spirits and immortality, divination by Yin-yang theory, and prognostication by apocrypha.
