Japanese Chinese poetry appeared in the middle of the 7th century, and it quitted the historical stage gradually at the beginning of the 20th century. So it has gone through a development for more than 1300 years. The continuous literature exchange embodied in Japanese Chinese poetry not only has become the important content of the literature history of two countries but has left a brilliant page in the history of the relationship in the literature field among the nations in the east and even around the world. It has also become a significant research field in the comparative study today.The term Japanese Chinese Poetry of this thesis refers to the poetry, which is written in Chinese and borrows Chinese images or literary quotations and created according to the rules and forms of Chinese classical poem.This thesis tries to make a comparative study between Japanese Chinese poetry and Chinese classical poem as well as Japanese national literature pattern from the angle of " style study ". It treats Japanese Chinese poetry as "a kind of style" and studies the function of " style consciousness " in its formation, development and change.The foreword of the paper defines and limits the concepts " Chinese literature " and "Chinese poetry", then sums up and introduces the major and representative poets during the four development stages of Japanese Chinese poetry. In the final part the paper elaborates the background, technique and major content of this research.In chapter one, the Japanese Chinese poetry is set in the background of ancient eastern Asian Chinese cultural circle. It is pointed out that Japanese Chinese poetry is the outcome of cultural exchange between China and Japan and even among the eastern Asian nations. Because of the prosperity of Chinese ancient culture, the communication medium was Chinese poetry in Chinese characters which became the common written language in eastern Asian Chinese cultural circle.
