Research Of Su Shi's Poetry Of Singing And Versifying

The singing and versifying of poetry goes through the whole period of Su Shi's composition and forms several peaks in this process. It is undoubted that Su Shi's poetry of singing and versifying has its value either from the ideological aspect and artistic achievement, or from its position in the poetic history. However, the previous scholars were mostly restrained by the traditional views on poetry and criticized it. The focus of dispute is that the traditional poetic theoreticians thought the poetry of singing and versifying is far away from the formula of "poetry speaks thought" or "poetry is born of emotion", only pursues the beauty of verses, making poetry the tool of game-playing and self-entertaining, which departs from the original meaning of poetry. According to the traditional point of view, Su Shi's poetry of singing and versifying has not been given enough attention for a long term. Actually, the ideas contained in Su's poetry of singing and versifying are very rich, multi-functional. It is not fair to judge these poems with any comment of "label". When we are put in the wider background of literary theory, when we do not regard social function as the only standard of judging literary works, when we go back to the research of text itself, we could easily see the literary and cultural values of poetry of singing and versifying.This thesis will be divided into three parts.In the first chapter, it is about the singing and versifying poems of Su Shi and Su Zhe (Su brothers). These poems are different from the singing poems in social circumstances. They mainly reflect the nostalgic and expressive emotions. The knowledge and status of Su brothers make the literary value of these poems better manifested. The singing and versifying poems of Su brothers can function as letters to convey different feelings. In these poems, something private and emotional is poured out in the letters of Su brothers. Especially when they live in the southern Fujian province in their old ages, they seemed to be totally closed in their composition. But for the great efforts of later scholars, something valuable and plain in the poems of Su brothers is discovered and kept.
