This dissertation makes a further and systematic study of the traditional institution as culture that occurs in Tujia Nationality, based on the correlative achievements in the academic field, the historical literature and pastoral data, and by means of various research approaches, such as ethnology, history, political science, sociology, etc. We hold the view that the study of the traditional institution as culture is helpful to develop the research field and to deepen the contents of the culture of Tujia Nationality;that it is helpful to understand correctly and deals with the ethnologic relationship in Tujia area so as to serve the construction of the harmonious society in Tujia area. Meanwhile, it also satisfies the need of times to inherit and develop the traditional culture of Tujia Nationality.This dissertation holds that institutional culture is a regime coagulated with cultural spirit. The special geographical environment and profound aggradations of culture gestate the production style, life style, national characteristics, thought features and aesthetic sentiment that are peculiar to Tujia Nationality, gives birth to Tujia's cultural particularity that differs from other nationalities, and produce Tujia's institution as culture that reveals the ethical cultural spirit.This dissertation is composed of four parts. Part One is the introduction that introduces the survey of Tujia's cultural research and expounds the realistic significance of the study of the traditional institution as culture of Tujia Nationality. In terms of the public institution of the social institutional systems, Part Two is the study of the cultures of the political systems, economic systems, legal systems, martial systems and educational systems in Tujia's traditional society. In terms of the selfishness institution of the social institutional systems, Part Three is the study of the cultures of the marital systems, religious systems, funeral systems and systems of gens in Tujia's traditional society. Part Four is the additional discussion which explores the cultural transition of the traditional institution of Tujia Nationality in the neoteric society. This part also discusses how to improve the traditional institution of Tujia Nationality in accordance with the cultural modernity and the modern spirit ofthe time in order to fully explore the modern significance of the traditional institution of Tujia Nationality and to create a new cultural system of Tujia Nationality which conserves ethical characteristics and fits the social progress.
