The emergence and existence of numerous painting associations is a kind of important and remarkable phenomenon. However, the importance of the academic subject has not been fully attached to by the circles of painting history. Starting from sociology and social history instead of the pure painting history, the dissertation attempts to conduct a complete and systematic investigation of such topics as its evolution, historical division, social & cultural causes of regional distribution & emergence, operation models, organization, position & function in modern painting history.Painting association is a product in social changes of modern China. The emergence is the inevitable choice of the development of modern Chinese painting history. The development of painting association in modern China has undergone the four periods, that is, the one of the change which inherits Chinese tradition, of primary development, of prosperity and of circuitous development. Painting associations in modern China are regionally unbalanced, most of which are based in economically and culturally developed areas. This results from social, political, economic and cultural factors. In terms of operation models, these associations are characterized by talents gathering, association, union and editorial office. Different operation models indicate that their inner organizations are quite different. The emergence of painting associations is a symbol of the growth of modern Chinese painters and it is of vital importance to the development of modern painting history and structure of painting circles.
