Yuan Mei ,a famous poet and theorist on poetry in Qing Dynasty. He was born in 1716,and died in 1797. Before he decided to live in Sui Garden in Nanjing to death ,he had been an official for several years. He ,though had a peculiar thoughts and comments on Confucianism ,was pursuing an easy-going and comfortable lifestyle .With good-quality and lots of works ,especially for his poetry-creating ,he was too famous around Jiang su and Zhe jiang Province at his time. And ,because his ' affection and inspiration' (xing ling) theory , to some extent ,Yuan Mei created one new aspect in the literature field.In this dissertation ,Yuan Mei's poetry , theories on poetry and thoughts of esthetics are studied.There are four parts in it.The first chapter mainly researches Yuan Mei's life. It holds that Yuan Mei has richful works and a peculiar thoughts. He lives a free life without obeying any restrictions. He criticizes Confucianism with his peculiar thoughts which leads to his character. Influenced by Confucianism and Taoism ,Yuan Mei takes 'Sui'( free and easy-going ) as his creed. What's more ,what he does in his whole life from lifestyle to poem-writing and poetics is burned with 'Sui'.The second chapter discusses Yuan Mei's poetry-writing based on his written-poetry. Yuan Mei can face the fatal arrangements in his life calmly and correct his aim to the best at any time .He gives up textual research working to poem-writing. His attitude towards poem-writing is based on his 'sui' creed, which emphasizes on heart training. He writes lots of poems to express himself including his life and his thoughts of life. His poems are not always polished from words to the main meaning .He just wants to combine his spirit world with his real life.His outstanding contribution to poem-writing is not in the noumenon of poem. He doesn't create new style of poem ,but his poems are plain with true feeling,from which his image and character can be read. What's more ,his poetry style is changing accompanying with his life experience and character changing. In his early life ,hispoetry style is deep and rigid while the upper style is spiritual and soft. In a word ,after his retreating ,his writing has a new looking and developed.Chapter Three is on Yuan Mei's poetics. It concludes that Yuan Mei has a understanding and multiple poetics which is based on his writing experience and his 'sui' creed. From his students' view ,his 'xing qing "xing ling' thoughts has different meaning which directs to different person's traits.Yuan Mei holds both sides unbiasedly.He makes commends on the style and theme of poems which should be combined greatly and logically. He thinks highly of the true feelings and protests the word-central and sole attitudes in poem writing. In his reception theory ,Yuan Mei discusses the importance of readers and talks about how to become a good and satisfied reader. And while criticizing works and poets ,Yuan Mei uses a variety of styles and means in his appreciating criticizing theory, which is also hard to be objective totally. He recollects other people's poems with his wide-collecting-without- omitting principle.In the last chapter ,Yuan Mei's ideas and aesthetics thoughts on Chinese painting and gardening and zoology are probed. Yuan Mei shows his own understanding of Chinese painting in his poems including his verve standard and his claims of painting skills . In his view of garden esthetics, Yuan Mei sticks to his 'sui 'attitudes while building his Sui Garden .He regards nature as his first choice .And Yuan Mei's poems also reveals his zoology esthetics though with classical and plain manner. One is his compassionate of things in natural world, the other is his everything-equality thinking. He , of course , doesn't deny human beings rights in his zoology esthetics.Above all ,this dissertation studies Yuan Mei's works and philosophy thoughts and poetry theory based on others researching results.
