A Study In Ma Xu-lun's Views On Six Scripts

Mr. Ma Xu-lun, a patriotic democratic fighter, achieved great accomplishments in a variety of areas such as Zhuangzi philosophy, lection and history, poetry, and Chinese calligraphy, and left behind him a lot of precious cultural legacy. He devoted his entire life to the study of linguistics and philology, especially in research in words, rhyme, and explanations of words in ancient Chinese books. Mr. Ma wrote a lot of books, including Research Methods of Shuowen Jiezi, Exemplifications of Chinese Character Formation, Exegesis on Shiguwen, Reading Inscriptions in Golden Implement, Methods of Chinese Character Formation. And Ma Xu-lun's Academic Anthology is a collection of some his remarkable studies. Among these books, Research Methods of Shuowen Jiezi is Mr. Ma's masterpiece. This thesis attempts, from the perspective of Mr. Ma's views on Six Scripts, to make an exhaustive review on Mr. Ma's works of philology, positioning his philology thoughts and achievements in specific exegesis, so as to give him a justified academic evaluation. This thesis contains six parts as follows:Part â… : IntroductionFirst, an introduction to Mr. Ma's life experiences and his major works on linguistics and philology. Second, a discussion on the study situation of Mr. Ma Xu-lun's Views on Chinese Character Formation. Third, the present study's significance and methods and main contents. Exegesis on Six Scripts in Shuowen Jiezi is a conclusive study in Shuowen Jiezi. At present, it does not receive its due attention among the academic community. Exegesis on Six Scripts in Shuowen Jiezi symbolizes a time which our research shall exceed but not ignore. Therefore, the current insufficiency in its research is not in line with its historical status and impact. A further all-round study is called for so that it can be academically defined in a more justified way. Thus, it is necessary to make a complete study in Exegesis on Six Scripts inShuowen Jiezi, wherein lies the important significance and goal of this thesis. Mr. Ma developed his views on Six Scripts based on plenty of research. The thesis will mainly discuss his views on Six Scripts.
