The China Travel Service horned at Shanghai in 1923 is the first traval agency of China in morden times and marked the beginning of Chinese tourism, which not only play an active role in national economy ,but also comtribute to anti-Japanese War. But at present, the field of history and tourism do little research on this typical case. Depending on the first-handed precious materials and by using the basic method of history and tourism,the paper has made a systematic study on its establishments, development, composition, business, management, corporate culture and theory study ect. This paper can be devided into 7 parts.The factors that the Chinese economic development in the early 20th century, the advancement of transportation, the moder nization of city and the transition of people'opinon about travelling, the useful experiences offered by the foreign travel agency in China contribute to the emergency of China Travel Service. At the same time, it relates closely to the special historical condition of Shanghai, the economic strategy of Shanghai commercial &Saving Bank and its founder-chen guang fu'attitude to life. With the changes of social situation, its development can be devided into five periods, that is , newly-establishment, advancement, migration, recovery and recession.In view of the wide field of services and the spreading branches throughout the country, the establishment of C.T.S. organization varies with the development of the services.The services offered by C.T.S. are comprehensive and can be classified into passenger transport, luggage transport ,hotel, tour, publishment and other social services.In its management, the C. T. S. focus on its internal management and business development. The paper states mainly three questions, that is ,business management, personal management and financial management.Culture is very important to a corporation. The spiritual culture of C.T.S.consists of service, coopration and persistence .Through behavior and visual identity strategy, the C.T.S. bulid its act culture and material culture.With the development of Chinese tourism, the staff of C.T.S. begin to study some theory questions, for example, concept, the relation- ship between tourism and economy ect. They offer the guideline for the current tourism and there is much in its method that today' tourism can make use of.At last, the paper shows that the ever increase of economy, the steadiness of politicial situation and the goverme nt'support ect. are objective causes for C.T.S. success. Its subjective causes includes strict management, excellent corporate culture, which give some useful inspirations to today.As the first travel agency, it accelerates the development of Chinese tourism, promotes material exchange, retrieves some national rights to a certain extent, speeds up the inland development, and spurs on the development of the relevant industry. It owns an important position in the history of Chinese tourism .
