Robert Morrison's entering China in 1807 marked the beginning of the spread of Christ in China. Afterward, many other missions also came into China one after another. Among them, the London Missionary Society was one of the important. At the present time, the study on individual missionary is not so more. This thesis selected John Macgowan, a missionary of L. M. S. as the study case, and try to use the relevant theories of modern sociology and other subjects and lots of Chinese and English materials to inquire into Macgowan completely. The author think that as a missionary, Macgowan made great contribution to the spread of Christ in China. He proposed the anti-footbinding firstly, and popularized to the whole country; he compiled dictionaries on Chinese dialects, wrote many books on the past and present of China, promoting the western conceptions about China. Meanwhile, as a Englishman, Macgowan unavoidably has many limitations, which made his many knowledge and cognitions self-contradictory, his way of "Christ Saved China" is also impracticable.
