The article uses the methodology ?which gathers the experience of three generations theorists about modern development theory ?for reference. In the view of æ•radition and modernity? we can draw the conclusion that Zhang.Jian has a solid foundation of traditional Confucian and is short of modem rationality spirit. While trying to pursue æ˜estern appliance? he is infatuated with æŠriental spir- it . He works out the ideal mode of modernization in Nantong according to grafting Euro- American utensil and form onto ancient China?s ethical society. He com- poses the internal relationship of Nantong?s æ˜ew World?in the light of sage moral principle and loses system reason and institution creation. He regards the sage elite adding the officialdom and the country gentry as the combination of mod- ernization force, and he doesn ?t know æ•he liberated individual?and the tenets of initiation at all, which leads to his enterprise be hollowed out by the force aspiring after traditional benefits.
