A Study Of The Hedong Pei Family And Their Literary Writings In The Middle Ancient Times

During the Wei, Jin and Southern and Northern Dynasties, when family politics was prevailing, old and great families had a pivotal role in the political arena. Their monopoly in cultural and academic areas has become academic consensus. In modern times, when it comes to the study of medieval history, Chen Yinke puts forward the "family-region" research model which combined family and region. It can be said that this study was inspired by Chen Yinke's "region-family" research model and focuses on the case study of the Hedong Pei family, aiming at an informative social and cultural understanding of the medieval aristocratic families.The thesis is divided into seven chapters, plus an appendix.The first chapter discusses the rise and fall of the Hedong Pei family. The first section falls into two parts to examine the origin and rise of the Hedong Pei family. It is believed that the Hedong Pei family originated in the Spring and Autumn Period, and rose in the Han Dynasty. The second section probes into the flourishing situation of the Hedong Pei family in the Two Jins and Northern and Southern Dynasties and the Sui and Tang Dynasties. Section Three is mainly focused on the decline of the Hedong Pei family in the late Tang Dynasty.The second chapter, which falls into three sections, probes into the genealogy of Xi Juan Pei, Xian Ma Pei, Zhong Juan Pei, Nan Laiwu Pei and Dong Juan Pei families. The research, which is based on The New Book of the Tang Dynasty-Prime Minister Descent Table, and combined with the epitaph material, draws a lot from previous research results, so as to make a more comprehensive and rational descent table for the Hedong Pei family.Chapter3probes into the migration of the Hedong Pei family during the Han Dynasty and Northern and Southern Dynasties. This chapter is divided into four sections. The first section examines the migration of the Hedong Pei family before the Han Dynasty. The second section focused on the straggly migration of the Hedong Pei family in the late Western Jin Dynasty. The third section is mainly about the migration of Dong Juan Pei and Nan Lai wu Pei during the Eastern Jin Dynasty, and Northern and Southern Dynasties. The fourth section probes into the migration of the Hedong Pei family in the late Sui Dynasty and during Tang Dynasty.The fourth chapter sums up the family tradition of the Hedong Pei family. It is concluded that the family tradition of the Hedong Pei family attaches importance to Confucianism, education, filial piety, and thrift. In this chapter the author also discusses the family traditions of the Hedong Pei family, such as metaphysics, strategics, history, literature, art, etc.Chapter5probes into the literary creation of the members of the Hedong Pei family. The literary life, circle of poets friends, and literary creation of Pei Qi, Pei Di, Pei Yizhi, Pei Du, Pei Xing are introduced in this chapter.Chapter6discusses the historiographical achievement of the members of the Hedong Pei family. The first section talks about such issues as the stylistic rules and layout, and philological contribution of Pei Songzhi's Commentaries on the History of the Three Kingdoms, and Pei Songzhi's ideas of compiling historiographical works. Section2researches into the stylistic rules and layout, and contents of Pei Yin's Collected Explanations and Commentaries on the Book of History.Chapter7summarizes the characteristics of literature, historiography, and metaphysics of the Hedong Pei family and analyzed their relationships with the family tradition and family education of the Hedong Pei family.In the appendix, the literature review of the works by the members of the Hedong Pei family is developed in four parts, respectively from the perspective of the writings on Confucian classics, the historical writings, the philosophical writings and the literary writings, which would be more intuitive to for us to understand and study the culture and academic contribution of their family.The conclusion part summarizes the rise and fall, the migration and the literary and cultural contribution of the Hedong Pei family. And an outlook for more research into its family literature is also mentioned in this part.
