The Xia-xie Literature is one of the important respect of late Qing dynasty literature. Urban style, gender culture had an important impact on writing and spreading of Xia-xie writing in the late Qing. Xia-xie literature also showed the pictures of different gender in Beijing-Shanghai, and reconstructed them with imagine which with distinctive characteristics, group mentality. These had an important significance for in-depth analysis of the late Qing literature, urban culture and gender culture.In addition to this introduction, this paper is divided into six chapters.First chapter inspected urban background and Xia-xie culture of the Late Qing Dynasty in Beijing and Shanghai. The Beijing's imperial capital scene and Shanghai's foreign settlement landscape shaped the distinctive city style. The actor-house and whorehouse showed the different Xia-xie culture. Beijing's intellectual like theatre and appreciated actor, which formed appreciating actor culture. In Shanghai brothel tour was prosperous which displayed the modern metropolis. Urban atmosphere of erotic Xia-xie impacted on people's cultural perceptions of gender.Second chapter combed Xia-xie writing of late Qing Dynasty in Beijing and Shanghai and researched its spread in the urban cultures. Beijing's writing about appreciating actor and the Shanghai brothel literature was echoed, The performance of an object, the performance of content and the way of spread in Xia-xie writing in these places had different forms, reflecting the impact of effects of urban culture.Third chapter researched dfferent sensual delight and gender culture showed by this literature in north and south. The actor and the prostitute became the object expressed by Xia-xie literature and showed the different literature style. Unfolding and urging somebody to drink of capital actor constructed the sensual pleasures; Shanghai prostitutes used fashion, apparel trends and the passions contacts with actors to shape sensual culture of Shanghai. Xia-xie writing showed performance of the city's life, but also implied a transition of gender. Fourth chapter researched literary writing about appreciating actor and prostitutes from beauties list in Beijing-Shanghai and the poetry for them. Literati showed emotion of visiting prostitutes and romantic. The forms of Beijing-Shanghai beauties lists and poetry were similar, but they showed a different literary style:the lists for actor and the poems in the capital reflected the traditional ideal and romantic feeling of the literati; Shanghai beauties lists for prostitutes and poems combined with newspaper media, literati in foreign settlement constructed a different kind of space to exhibit talent.Fifth chapter discussed the picture of communication and mentality in Beijing and Shanghai which intellectual exchanged actor in capital and intellectual with prostitutes in foreign settlement.Intellectual exchanged emotion, expressed themselves, showing intellectual mentality of fighting for visiting actors as well as certain political means influenced by capital culture. Shanghai's intellectual built up the lives of the literati picture by looking for sex partner in whorehouse. They wandered about the shanghai whorehouse to cater for the city erotic entertainment and the public mood, and used a complex state of mind to face Shanghai prosperous to reshape literary value.Sixth chapter researched intellectual culture which Xia-xie writing manifested. Xia-xie writing took us into cultural writing and literary imagination, and introduced visiting actor and prostitutes to the context of reading and consumption cultural, which promoted the sensual culture of Beijing and Shanghai. The capital literati invests own ideal in appreciating actor and reconstructed by culture. The charming story of "zhuang yuan fu ren " fused traditional ideas and the romantic literati, which spread widely. Wang Tao as the representative of intellectual in the foreign settlement landscape also unfold sexual life by Xia-xie writing and integrated cultural ideal.
