Obesity is one of the greatest public health challenges of the 21st century. Obesity can cause many diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. Obesity can treat with dietary advice, behavior therapy, excessive, drug treatment, surgery, and complementary treatment. Among complementary treatment recently acupuncture is coming more interested and there are little data in this regard in Iran. Therefore, we wish to investigate the effect of Auricular (Ear) and Electro Body Acupunctures on weight loss, anthropometric indexes, biochemical markers and novel coronary risk factors such as Anti-Heat Shock Proteins (Anti-HSPs).Male and female overweight (25≤BMI>30) obese (BMI≥30) subjects aged between 18-60 years old were recruited from Nutritional clinic, Ghaem hospital, Mashhad, Iran for ear total (n=190), and electro body total (n=178), acupunctures. Subject with any cardiovascular, endocrine disease, using of medication, Diabetes, Pregnancy. Were excluded. All subjects were completed consent form of this study, which was approved by ethic committee of research council of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. Each ear and electro body acupunctures were randomly divided into real and sham (superficial and difference place) acupunctures and acupunctured for 45 days by twice per week, and follow for another 45 days. Both real and sham acupunctures groups were received dietary advice during this period. Anthropometric indices include body mass index (BMI), weight, height, and waist/hip ratio and body fat percentage (by bio-impedance analyzer). Biochemical markers including fasting blood glucose, lipid profile were measured by routine enzymatic method and anti-HSPs were measured by in-house ELISA. All anthropometric indices, biochemical markers were assessed before treatment and after 45 and 90 days of treatment. Statistical analyses were performed by SPSS 16.Both ear and electro body acupunctures were reduced weight, BMI, waist/hip ratio in both shame and real groups, as both of these groups were received dietary advice (p<0.001). However, the percentage of reduction of weight and BMI and waist/hip ratio was greater in real group than shame groups (p<0.001). The reduction of weight and BMI were not increased after treatment up to 45 days. The percentage of weight reduction was more in ear acupuncture than electro body acupuncture.Lipid profile were improved in electro body acupuncture (p<0.001), but not in ear acupuncture. Anti-HSP-27,-60,-65,-70 were reduced in both ear and electro body acupunctures (p<0.001), which was significantly higher in real acupuncture than shame acupuncture (p<0.001)In conclusion, both Ear and Electro body Acupunctures reduced weight, BMI, waist/hip ratio and anti-HSPs as a novel coronary risk factors. However, reduction of weight and BMI was more prominent in ear acupuncture; improving lipid profile was more prominent in electro body acupuncture. Using of acupuncture as a complementary treatment for obesity was recommended in selected subject by expert acupuncturist.
