Background and Objective:Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a major worldwide public healthproblem that has an increasing prevalence and mortality. COPD is an obstructive airway disorder characterized by airflow limitation that is not completely reversible. Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress are widely recognized as central features of many diseases. Exhaled breath condensate analysis has enormous potential as a non-invasive means of monitoring inflammation, oxidantive stress in COPD patients'airway. The aim of this study is to quantify chronic inflammation and oxidative stress in the lungs in patients with COPD and in healthy nonsmokers, as reflected by interleukin-6 (IL-6), leukotriene B4(LTB4) and 8-isoprostane concentrations in breath exhaled condensate.Glucocorticoid receptor-α (GCR) and Nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) are inducible transcription factors with diametrically opposed functions in the regulation of immune and inflammatory responses. NF-κB is known to mediate the transcriptional activation of a variety of cytokines and cytokine-induced genes involved in immunity. GR, long known to function as a suppressor of immunity and inflammation, inhibits the expression of many of the same cytokines and cytokine-induced genes that are activated by NF-κB. The aim of our study was to characterize the expression and localization of P65, the major subunit of NF-κB, and GCR. We also wanted to examine the relationship between P65 and GCR expression. The incentive for the development of a practical health status instrument, the St George's Respiratory Questionnaire(SGRQ ) arose from routine clinical management of COPD in general practice where it was recognized that clinicians require a simple tool that will help them to identify not only the clinical status of the airways but also activity limitation and emotional dysfunction in the patient. The aim of this study was to cord the Chinese edition of SGRQ and validate the SGRQ in COPD patients.
