As a member and master of the four great physicians on epidemic febrile disease in the Qing Dynasty, Wu Jutong wrote a book called Systematized Identification of Epidemic Febrile Diseases including the principles, methods, formulas and medicinals on epidemic febrile disease. Wu's book formed the systematic syndrome identification and treatment on damp-heat disease according to the theory essence of ancient physicians and his own clinical experience, with a high value of theory and clinical application. The clinical practice has proved that Wu's theory and formulas on the damp disease are adaptable widely. With the development of society and changes in human lifestyle, the diseases caused by damp are increasing widely and complicatedly. Therefore, Wu's theory and formulas on the damp disease will be widely used and this research will be important to guide the clinical practice. The author explored Wu's theory and treatment on damp-heat disease from three aspects.Part I:Wu's theory on the syndrome identification of damp-heat disease. Wu Jutong named damp-heat disease for the first time and discussed the syndrome identification and treatment on the basis of The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon, The Classic of Difficult Issues and Ye Tianshi's theory. According to Systematized Identification of Epidemic Febrile Diseases, Wu discussed generalized damp-heat disease including the external contraction and internal damage. Meanwhile, Wu compared damp heat and cold damp for the first time, showing his emphasis on cold damp. In addition, Wu Jutong formed the Sanjiao syndrome identification on the epidemic febrile disease and applied in damp heat disease. Wu used Ye Tianshi's defense, qi, construction and blood syndrome identification as well and usually combined with Sanjiao syndrome identification. More important, Wu Jutong imitated Zhang Zhongjing's On Cold Damage and formed the formulas and syndrome corresponding system in the epidemic febrile disease, which is convenient for future generations to learn and grasp the epidemic febrile disease.Part II:Wu's treatment on damp-heat disease. Wu's treatment on damp-heat disease was mainly affected by Zhang Zhongj ing, Wu Youke, Ye Tianshi, especially by Ye Tianshi. Wu's formulas were mainly come from Ye Tianshi's A Clinical Guide with Case Histories as well. This article summarized Wu's treatment on the epidemic febrile disease from damp heat disease and cold damp disease and to provide a theoretical reference for the clinical treatment.Part III:The influence and inspiration of Wu's theory and treatment for future generations. Wu's theory and treatment on the epidemic febrile disease could guide the syndrome identification and treatment not only for damp-heat disease caused by external contraction but also for internal medical diseases, with a very high clinical significance and practical value. Under Wu's guide, doctors later put forward many new ideas and thoughts on damp-heat disease caused by internal damage and cold damp diseases.
