Objective Retrospective study was conducted to study clinical characteristics and control criteria of glycemic variability in elderly patients with T2DM.Methods 337 elderly patients who received CGM from Jan.2007 to Jan.2011 were investigated. Using a uniform questionnaire, diabetes history, physical examination and labatory test of subjects were studied retrospectively, and data of CGM were analyzed. Resultsâ‘ Clinical characteristics of glycemic variability: glycemic variability was lower in males than in females (P<0.05), did not change significantly as aging, but increased gradually with extension of diabetes duration (P<0.05). Female, diabetes duration and HbAlc were risk factors of abnormal MAGE (P<0.05).â‘¡Effect of glycemic variability on the risk of nocturnal hypoglycemia:LBGI and nocturnal hypoglycemic events in abnormal MAGE group were much higher than normal MAGE group (P<0.01). MAGE was significantly correlated with LBGI (r=0.320, P<0.01). MAGE was a risk factor of abnormal LBGI independently (P<0.05).â‘¢Control criteria of glycemic variability:when HbAlc<7.0% was considered as standard of diabetes control, control criteria of MAGE and SDBG should be<4.1mmol/L and<1.7mmol/L respectively. When LBGI<2.5 was considered as standard, MAGE and SDBG should be<3.3mmol/L and<1.6mmol/L, which had a similar HbAlc and a lower LBGI (P<0.05). Conclusion Glycemic variability was significantly correlated with sex, diabetes duration and HbAlc, but not with aging. Glycemic variability was an independent risk factor of nocturnal hypoglycemia. Control criteria of glycemic variability in elderly patient with T2DM should be MAGE<3.3mmol/L and SDBG<1.6mmol/L.
