In this study, based on the object of stduying structural patterns of sustainable agroecosystems in the Lower Reaches of Liaohe Plain, an agroecoiogicai information system and an integrated expert system were built using the integration of expert system ( ES), geographic information system (GIS) and relational database management system (RDBMS) . The agroecoiogical information system could query information on characterastics of crop varieties, examples of sustainable agroecosystem patterns and regional agroecological conditions, while the integrated expert system could determine the suitability of a given pattern to various units and the suitability of various patterns to a given unit.The system features include: â‘ spatial display of knowledge base results;â‘¡ query of agroecoiogicai information;â‘¢oriented~problems at regional level.The development of the system not only provides decision support for the administrative officials and agricultural technical staff at different levels (provincial, county, township) of Liaoning Province to design and manage multiple cropping patterns in the Lower Reaches of Liaohe Plain in practice, but also explores a new approach to managing agroecosystems using the integrated methods of AI/ES technology, GIS and RDBMS in theory.
