Bundle Urban Design Study

Based on the writer's experience of research and design for many years, the paper firstly analyses the characteristics of urban design in China. After its conception was brought forward independently, modern urban design has been more and more popular in a short period. Not only it's study scopes extend largely in depth, width and span, but also the involved people including designer, governor and all citizen have touched upon all kind of social positions or ranks. Urban design, the production and cosset of the pluralistic thought of design, has such a complicated background which involves plenty of factors that we should pay attention to: style of the social organization, form of the economy development, statute systems and so on and so forth.Academe in China began to put attention and developed their study in urban design at 1980's. Most of the design problems have got a new dimension of thought after that: urban site planning, transportation organization, environment landscaping, urban conservation and renewal, street landscaping, pedestrian design, facade reconstruction etc. Before long, insurgent waves of urbanization bring us lots of "urban design" items. Without forearmed, flurried architects and planners work out many kinds of urban design "productions" which have different depth, degrees of statutes, tangle functions and unable to put into application-what's wrong with them?According to the experience about the theories of urban design, we then get some standpoints of our own. The most important thing we need is to develop a rational and canonical procedure for urban design operations. In other words, we should work over some technique policies to protect urban design operations.Function duality system of urban design illuminated by this paper is a research for urban design operations. In this function system we will focus on the design category, functions, operation procedure and power in use.The paper secondly analyses the technical methods and practical processes of function duality system of urban design., including the following contents:1.Explaining the meaning of "flexible control" and "conventional control"; introduce all the factors involved.2. Bringing forward the concept of level classification that is to describe a project with three related levels "district", "block" and "lot". Here also comes the opinion of distinguished control in different district.3.Interpreting why to, what to and how to control a project in the "lot" level.4.Introducing the attributes and control methods of "lots" located in different "districts" such as "gravitation center", "gravitation incidence", "gravitation margin" and "heritage place".5.The definition of the function system of design guide in controlling urban design;6.The status of the function system of design guide in controlling urban design;7.The content of the function system of design guide;8. The internal relation between the function system of design guide and develop restriction.
