In this papa; the test plans with multilevel are drawn up by using Uniform Design method, the relationship between the content of that four levels coarse aggregates (19.00-4.75mm) and the VOIdS in the Coarse Aggregates (VCA) are analyzed, the Dynamic Shear Rheology (DSR) and the Blend Beam Rheology (BBR) tests are applied to research the rheologic characterization of mastic asphalt mortars with those test plans. Base on this test results, the law of VCA is revealed, the performance mechanism of mortars is discussed as well. After this, the gradation of Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) is studied. In order to get the accurate volumetric parameter, many test procedures are compared. With a lot of contrast analyses, the errors that lies in the traditional SMA design procedure are indicated, and the right method is given.The different compact method will bring on the different design results on the Hot Asphalt Mixtures. It is well known that the Marshall method cannot simulate the behavior of asphalt mixture in the using condition, on the other hand, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Gyrator Testing Machine (GTM) can do it well. The two kinds of method using in SMA Mix design are compared in volumetric parameter and road-related performance, it is shown that the mixture with GTM compacted has a better road-related performance than that one with Marshall method. The volumetric parameter and road-related performance are also studied with various coarse aggregate~ fine aggregate~ filler and bituminous contents, and the mechanism of SMA mixstrength is discussed.In this paper, a set of procedure of SMA mix design that could simulate GTM compacting method is presented, and it can be applied in practice.
