As a kind of novel photochromic material, diarylethenes have been under widely research due to excellent thermal stability, good fatigue-resistance, fast response, and high conversion degree. Their latent applications are of memory, molecular switch, multi-color display, and light-driven molecular motors. While supramolecular self-assembly is a comparatively new research subject which has been developed rapidly recently, supramolecular self-assembly is based on non-covalent bond, and their applications lie in molecular recognition, combination chemistry, dynamic chemistry and etc. Thus, the research work on supramolecular self-assembly based on diarylethene is carried out. A series of diarylethene have been designed and synthesized, which contain dimmerization moiety, hydrogen bond, metal-ligand complex and etc. Study on the properties of self-assembly and photochromism of them are carried out from four chapters. In Chapter one, the progress is reviewed from the concept and application of photochromic diarylethenes, including photochromic theory, their classification, synthetic methods. Recent research on supramolecular self-assembly and photochromic supramolecule are also shortly reviewed. In Chapter two, a series of compounds incorporating amide andπ-conjugate moiety were designed, in which only cyclohexyl amide based diarylethenes were able to form stable organogelators. They emit comparatively strong fluorescence both in dilute solution and in gel state. Reversible photochromism could occur efficiently both in dilute solution and in gel, resulting in obvious change of color and fluorescence. Study of the material's application in information storage is also carried out.In Chapter three, weak intermolecular hydrogen bond is designed through pyridine and carboxylic acid, which is verified by IR XPS ~1H NMR characterizations. The self-assembly complex gives special photophysical and photochemical properties and these properties could be well controlled by light. In Chapter four, two diarylethene compounds containing phenanthroline group and corresponding metal complexes were synthesized. These compounds correspond to light, halide ion to give absorption and fluorescent changes. Metal complexes based on these ligands were also synthesized and studied. In Chapter five, a diarylethene containing coumarin moiety was synthesized. Coumarin could respond to light to form dimmer, widely applied in light-controlled release of drugs and design of drugs. The reversible photochromism, photodimmerization and photocleave were studied. In Chapter six, a concise conclusion about the above work was made.
