Yunnan is situated in southwest China’s border areas and is China’s third largest compact community of the Hui people with a population of nearly 800,000 mostly found in Kunming, Yuxi, Honghe, Dali, Zhaotong, Qujing and Wenshan and other areas. It is more than 700 years since the Hui people migrated into Yunnan in the Yuan Dynasty. Thanks to the influence of Islam and other factors, the Hui people’s handicrafts and commerce and trade have been handed on fairly well in the course of their development. Especially since the Third Plenum Session of the 11th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in 1978, the private enterprises of self-employed laborers and township enterprises have sprung up like mushrooms in Yunnan’s most areas of the Hui people. In these areas, the businesswincome of the secondary and tertiary industries has accounted for more than 90% of the total of the rural economy, and more sizable private enterprises have fallen into more diversified categories. The development of the Hui people’s private enterprises has made a positive contribution to social progress. The private enterprises of the Hui people have been profoundly (?)ienced by Hui people’s culture in the course of their development. The questions of what influence Hui people’s culture has exerted on the Hui people’s private enterprises and how these two have interacted are the research subject of the present dissertation. The following goals can be attained and the following significance can be achieved through the present dissertation’s study:Firstly, by using the theory and methodology of business anthropology, one can make a systematic study both of the general situation of the private enterprises in the Tonghai Nagu urban Hui community of Yunnan province and of the factors of Hui people’s culture that have promoted their development; one can interpret the mechanism by which Hui people’s culture has played a role in the corporate development of Nagu’s Hui people; with the methods of literature research, field surveys, questionnaires and analytic hierarchy process (AHP), one can sort out and sum up Hui people’s cultural factors, provide a theoretical basis for the transformation of Hui people’s cultural content into Hui’s enterprises culture, offer a theoretical reference to the development of private enterprises of the Hui people.Secondly, from the study of private enterprises of Nagu’s Hui people, one can draw lessons for the development of private enterprises in ethnic minority areas, refine the elements of intrinsic links between minority people’s culture and their economic development, and finally enrich and improve the theory of business anthropology. In short, the present study reveals the interaction between Hui people’s culture and the development of Hui people’s private enterprises and thus enriches the theory of business anthropology, systematically distills Hui people’s culture factors that have produced an impact on the development of the Hui people’s private enterprises, and provides a theoretical reference for the content of Hui people’s culture to be transformed into that of Hui’s enterprises culture. The present dissertation consists of the introduction, chapters 1 to 6 and concluding remarks. The introduction includes the research background, goals and significance; the current research at home and abroad; the research perspectives, methods and thinking; and the research value.Chapter 1 introduces the Hui people’s culture in Yunnan, the point of the fieldwork and the basic knowledge of business enterprises.Chapter 2 is an analysis of the industrial types and the present development of the Hui people’s private enterprises in Town Nagu.Chapter 3 is a study of the economic structure model of "business around Jamaats" in Town Nagu, including its neighbourhood economy, industrial layout, operational characteristics and dynamic mechanism.Chapter 4 reflects the research on Town Nagu’s cultural industry of cutting tools, including the history and current condition of this tool industry and the key factors affecting its development.Chapter 5 is a study, with the change of Town Nagu’s steel industry, including the change’s process and the strength of promoting change.Chapter 6, with the methods of content analysis and AHP, is the analysis and assessment of cultural factors of Islam that have affected the Hui people’s development of private enterprises in Yunnan. The concluding remarks are an introduction to the dissertation’s main content and conclusion and a discussion to the Hui people’s development of private enterprises on the basis of main content and the conclusion, including the relationship between development and the culture, self-realization of Hui people’s culture and self-confident and self-strong of Hui people’s culture, the inspiration of Hui people’s private enterprises. The present dissertation, with the methods of business anthrbpolegy, presents a systematic study of the private enterprises development in Town Nagu and Hui people’s cultural factors that have promoted their development, an interpretation of the role and mechanism of Hui people’s culture, and the provision of a theoretical basis for Hui people’s culture to be transformed into Hui’s enterprises culture, thus demonstrating a certain pioneering nature. The following conclusions can be drawn from this study:The development of private enterprises of Nagu’s Hui people is closely related with Islam and Islamic culture. Seen either from the industrial types of Nagu’s private enterprises of the Hui people, the economic structure of "business around Jamaats" and the development of cutting tools-based cultural industry, or from the change of steel industry, the religion in Islamic culture of Nagu’s Hui people has produced the greatest impact on the development of private enterprises, which is regarded as primary; impacts of the economic culture are secondary; the education and ethics have wielded a certain influence on their development; the mosque-based culture has exerted an intangible influence on their development, for which the main reason is that the role of the mosque is to be reflected by the religious culture, is to back up the religious culture, and is actually blended together with the religious culture with no obvious boundaries in between. In the secondary factors of influence, those of religious beliefs with the Six Beliefs as the core are primary; the advocacy of commerce and mercantilism, the religious practices with the Five Duties as the core, the devout beliefs, the honesty in doing business and the fair deal have produced a greater impact on the development of private enterprises of Nagu’s Hui people; a wealth of knowledge, the tenacity and hard work, the unity and cooperation, the religious and social activities centers, the habit of doing labour, the great importance attached to production, the fairness and justice, the mosque as an educational institution, the moderate consumption and the practice of industry and thrift have a certain influence on the development of private enterprises of Nagu’s Hui people; and the good health, the refined and elegant tastes and the mosques as the economic entities have an insignificant influence on the development of private enterprises of Nagu’s Hui people.
