This dissertation, probing into the Jin Jiang Wen Xue Cheng online forum of Romance Novels, reports a research into Chinese women in the virtual community of Romance Novels. Applying the research approach of field perspective and implement qualitative research methods such as participatory observation and in-depth interview, the dissertation found that these women groups, which participate in the romance novels dissemination and acceptance, showing cross-media and diversified characteristics, initially formed a cultural phenomenon of women’s self-presentation, self-creation and self-propagating. Compared with traditional romance readers, they use media in a more active way. Thus the women groups expand the ways they manage to express themselves, as opposed to being passively manipulated by mainstream culture.Chapter one presents the dissertation’s core issue, theoretic framework, significance, purpose and methodology, etc. It also reviews the study of popular culture on the topic of women’s communicate and recept on romance novels.Chapter two first reviews the development of romance novels, especially in America and Taiwan, followed by a historical analysis of the rising of online romance novels in mainland China.Chapter three initiates with a depiction of the online romance novels’ production process and interaction system, and focuses in ananalysis of the characteristics of using cross-media by the women groups.Chapter four studies the underlying meaning of romance novels as women cultural communication; discuss the possibility that online romance novels become active resistance to patriarchy and expression of female discourse.Chapter five do a comprehensive summary of the full text with a reflection on the shortcomings of this study, and on this basis prospects within this research field possible future mining and development research direction.
