The nature of Chinese calligraphy advocates a kind of non-realistic art of expression by using Chinese character symbol as the carrier. Due to its cultural content with certain cultural prescriptive, it is precisely this Chinese character symbol that determines its change of limitation; namely, calligraphy has to be written in Chinese characters. Therefore, contrary to western painting, it cannot embark on the two parallel tracks as the inheritance of traditional skills or paint directly from life. Instead, it only can be built on the strength of its traditions, by using the opportunity of the evolution of Chinese character fonts. When the font evolution is finished, the standardized Chinese characters and different characters combination have taken on the evolution of the road in the existing styles of calligraphy. Regardless of the external path we chose to follow, the basis of the development of calligraphy skills lies in the in-depth study of our predecessors, which is why copying the masters is the one and only way for most copyists who learn calligraphy. As for the core techniques appeared in the classic templates, they correspond to the world of Chinese calligraphy "formula". However, "formula" was unequal to "stylized manner", where what they differ lie in the presentation and representation respectively. "Formula" is the core principles that were summarized and refined by humankind when they passing through a long historical precipitation; While "stylized manner" is the imitation or copy of representation that is based on the duplication of some techniques and organizing patterns in models. Despite China’s centuries-old calligraphic tradition has providedlearners a paragon and knowledge reserve for the practicing, but the popular notion from different backgrounds of times would presuppose something to be desired, especially when it comes to the calligraphic styles, preferences and skills. There is no doubt that one cannot speak separately of copying, for the learners would be inevitably subject to the aesthetic concept and artistic taste that in line with the specific times features. In addition, due to the varied personality, life experiences and aestheticinterests of each calligrapher, the copying effect would not be the same, or turn on different styles, even for the same copybook. In other words, a transformation of calligraphic tradition deeply manifested itself in its copying concepts and the evolution of practice.Through two kinds of copying theory and calligraphy works conforming each other, this paper objectively analyzes the copying phenomenon in penmanship history, and interprets the copying secrets of many great calligraphers covering their practice and discussion, especially when it reaches an advanced stage, the influence of imagery copying on the formation of the calligraphy style.
