The aesthetic concept of ‘Abnormal and Broken’ originated from Lao zi and Zhuang zi. In history, there are masterpieces which contain this concept is contrary to the Confucianism orthodox aesthetic traditions, it is difficult to be developed fully. After Jiajing in Ming Dynasty, ‘Abnormal and Broken’ aesthetic concepts had ample space for development on account of the development of culture, economic and political at that time. In addition, it is because of the influence by Wang’s theory of respecting for maniac spirit, and the changes which exacerbated transformation in the scholar’s psychology and ideology in Ming and Qing Dynasties. This dissertation is based on the phenomenon of ‘Abnormal and Broken’ in the calligraphy, painting and seal cutting in Ming and Qing Dynasties. I will analyze the aesthetic concept of ‘Abnormal and Broken’ interacted upon each other, learned from each other in the different forms and creative methods of calligraphy, painting and seal cutting. Then, the process which formed their own style of this three different Chinese art forms will be presented. As far as I am concerned that the aesthetic factors which are unique to the concept of ‘Abnormal and Broken’ are astonishment, commiseration and struggle. Through external and unconventional visual expression, the internal emotional factors of pitiful will be manifested, so the viewer can comprehend artists’ contradiction during the process of creation from the aesthetic experience of ‘Abnormal and Broken’. The contradiction is exactly the externalization of artists’ personality and spirit, thus, it reveals that the aesthetic concept of ‘Abnormal and Broken’ has reached a consensus between the subject of creation and the object of appreciation, and this concept has been an independent aesthetic category as well. The aesthetic idea of ‘Abnormal and Broken’ appeared in a variety of art forms relatively concentrated and frequently in Ming and Qing Dynasties, it is sufficient to prove that this concept had been a fashion, and had a special significance of the development of the calligraphy, painting and seal cutting in Ming and Qing Dynasties.
