Known as the miscellaneous calligraphies of Wang Xizhi(王羲之)and Wang Xianzhi(王献之)of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, two Wangs’miscellaneous calligraphies have the dual natures, being unearthed documents as well as hand-down documents. On the basis of the existing calligraphy and text transcripts collated, the featured words and synonyms are systematically described and elaborated; new words are interpreted newly and given new meanings; some of the long mistaken interpretations are corrected.Study on vocabulary must be based on reliable text. In All Jin Writings(《全晋文》),which has been widely accepted in the academic circle as the best transcript of the two Wangs’miscellaneous calligraphies so far, there are still a lot of mistakes.By referring to calligraphies such as Chunhua Court Calligraphies Rubbing in Song Dynasty(《宋拓淳化阁帖》)and transcripts such as Record of Main Calligraphy(《法书要录》), by using traditional methods, e.g. collating, checking, proving and explaining etc. and modern lexicology theory,36mistaken transcriptions by people from the time immemorial and70record errors in All Jin Writings are corrected. The stylistic requirements of letters and the content nature of mourning or greeting have determined the terminology features of two Wangs’ miscellaneous calligraphies. In the first place, the featured words are classified into five categories. They are letters, euphemism, meeting and parting, health and disease. In the second place, they are studied systematically. Their formation, spread and changes are fully explored. Two Wangs’miscellaneous calligraphies are extraordinarily rich in synonyms. After exploring synonyms’ formation and their identifying methods, emotional synonyms are studied. According to the emotional type, emotional synonyms are categorized into worry, concern, sadness and consolation. Each type of emotional synonyms is explored from the aspect of word-building ability. One of the main reasons why two Wangs’miscellaneous calligraphies are so difficult to understand is the interpretation of the words. Therefore, nearly70new words are checked and given explanations, and25common words, which indicate uncommon sense in two Wangs’miscellaneous calligraphies, are newly interpreted. In addition, although nearly20words more have been involved in some lexicographical works or researches of former scholars, the annotations are not secure. So corrections have been made with the help of two Wangs’miscellaneous calligraphies and they can play an important reference role for dictionaries to add lexicographical entries and supplement interpretation of words.
