In the study of hospital administration, how to evaluate a hospital's functions and how to select a statistical index and set up an evaluation index system are a project of great theoretical and pragmatic significance both at home and abroad. With the implementation of market economy in China and the formation of new social medical mode, the traditional hospital evaluation only in terms of both social and economic benefits. Thus, the problm of how to assess comprehensive benefits of a hospital has been put forward.To evaluate a hospital's functions, we must analyze its features, choose a clan index which can reflects all aspects of its work and then analyze the relationships between these figures.In this paper, data gathered from 141 hospitals in china in 1991 are divided into 7 sub - systams of hospital administration system. including staff, enviroment. fixed assets and equipments. goods and materials, medical service. reseach and training. information and benefit. Following advice of experts and hospital staff. 156 raw statistical items were listed. which were index sieved by various statistical methods, based upon this sieve and analysis, an evaluation index system suitable for the current operation mechanism of Chinese hospitals was set up. This system is characterized by the following traits:1) It delegates the principal statistical information of Chinese hospitals and in the meantime it is accurate. reliable and representative.2) The objective tree for hospital evaluation by combining the hospital input with output can provide reliable basis for hospital "TQC" .3) The 5 indexes of economic benefit and 2 control indexes in the system, which can illustration a hospital's economic benefits. is of great practical value to hospital administration by combining social benefits with economic ones.4) Methods applied by and part of the results of the study have been accepted by the Ministry of Health and applied in some hospital assessments.
